Free Resignation Letter Generator for Kenya (PDF Download)
Write a correct resignation letter in a few minutes: standard one-month or 28-day notice, 24-hour resignation, TSC teacher, nurse, civil servant or a letter with a handover plan. The tool works out your last day and makes a ready-to-sign PDF on your own phone or computer.

How to Use the Resignation Letter Generator
- Pick the type of letter. Each option changes the wording, the notice period and who the letter is addressed to.
- Fill in your details and the employer’s. Only your name, job title (or TSC number) and employer are required. Everything else is optional.
- Check the dates. The tool counts your notice from the date of the letter and shows the last working day, including the day of the week. If it lands on a weekend, or your contract counts notice differently, type your own last day.
- Download the PDF or copy the text. Print and sign the PDF, or paste the text into an email to HR. The draft is saved in this browser only, so you can come back and edit it.
Which Letter Fits Your Situation
Standard notice: one month or 28 days
Under section 35(1)(c) of the Employment Act, 2007, anyone paid monthly can end the contract with 28 days’ written notice. That rule binds you as much as the employer. If your contract asks for longer, say one or three months, section 35(2) makes the contract’s period apply. Check your letter of appointment and enter the period it gives. Our termination notice guide explains how notice is counted.
24-hour resignation
There is no “24-hour notice” in the Act for monthly-paid staff. What makes an immediate exit lawful is section 36: either party may end the contract at once by paying the other the remuneration for the notice period. The generator gives you two versions. One offers to pay in lieu and lets the employer recover the amount from your final dues. The other asks the employer to waive notice. Section 38 says that when an employer waives notice you have given, it must pay you for the unserved period unless you both agree otherwise, so the waiver letter asks HR to confirm in writing how that will be handled. Do not simply stop reporting: absence without leave can be treated as gross misconduct, as our summary dismissal guide explains.
TSC teacher
Teachers resign under Regulation 157 of the TSC Code of Regulations for Teachers, 2015. A teacher on permanent and pensionable terms gives 30 days’ notice, a teacher on probation 7 days, or pays one month’s or seven days’ salary in lieu. Teachers on contract also give 30 days. The letter must be addressed to the Secretary of the Commission through the head of institution or the sub-county director, and the resignation takes effect when you stop teaching but no later than 30 days from the date of the letter, so the tool will not let you pick a later date. You must stay on duty until then (Regulation 157(8)), you can withdraw the notice before the effective date (157(9)), and the head of institution issues a clearance certificate (157(5)). Some older TSC web pages still mention three months’ notice; the Code as revised on Kenya Law says 30 days. The TSC resignation page adds that resigning does not attract pension benefits, although a male teacher who resigns can claim a WCPS refund. If you are moving to another school or employer, see current TSC recruitment and the ECDE teacher salary guide.
Nurse or health worker
Nurses in private hospitals follow their contract and section 35. Nurses employed by a county follow the county’s public service rules. County HR manuals are generally modelled on the national public service manual described below; Elgeyo Marakwet’s, for example, uses the same one-month rule. Check your county manual or letter of appointment. The nurse letter goes to the medical superintendent through the nursing officer in charge, and it commits you to working your shifts and handing over patients, ward records, keys and drug registers. A clear, written handover protects your patients and protects you if questions come up after you leave. Newly qualified? Browse jobs for KRCHN diploma holders.
Civil servant or county officer
Section 78 of the Public Service Commission Act, 2017 says a public officer resigns by writing to the appointing authority and giving one month’s notice or paying one month’s salary in lieu. The public service HR Policies and Procedures Manual (section D.19) adds that the salary in lieu is gross salary, that officers on contract resign according to their contract, and that you must settle any money owed to the government before you leave. The letter therefore includes your PF number and a request for clearance. For openings in other ministries and agencies, see PSC jobs and county government jobs.
Letter with a handover plan
Listing what you will hand over, and to whom, shows good faith and makes it harder for anyone to hold up your final dues later. Write one item per line: open files, cash floats, passwords and system access, client accounts or pending payments.
Worked Examples
- One month’s notice. Wanjiru, an accounts assistant in Nakuru, dates her letter 19 October 2026. Her contract asks for one month, so the tool shows her last working day as Thursday, 19 November 2026. If her contract only said 28 days, the last day would be Monday, 16 November 2026.
- Leaving in 24 hours. Kevin earns a basic salary of KSh 45,000 plus a KSh 7,000 house allowance and his contract requires one month’s notice. If he resigns on 19 October 2026 effective the next day and offers pay in lieu, the amount is one month’s remuneration, about KSh 52,000 before tax, normally deducted from his final pay. Business Radar’s notice pay calculator works out the figure for other notice periods.
- TSC teacher. Akinyi, confirmed on permanent and pensionable terms, dates her letter 19 October 2026. Her resignation takes effect no later than Wednesday, 18 November 2026, and the letter goes to the TSC Secretary through her principal, with a copy to the sub-county director.
After You Hand In the Letter
- Get proof of delivery. Ask HR to stamp or sign your copy, or send the PDF by email and keep the sent message.
- Know what you are owed. You should get salary for days worked, pay for untaken leave and anything your contract adds. Add it up with our terminal dues calculator and read the terminal dues guide. Our annual leave guide explains how leave days are paid out.
- Ask for a certificate of service. Section 51 requires the employer to issue one if you worked for four consecutive weeks or more. It records the employer, your start and end dates and the nature of your work.
- Check your take-home pay at the new job. Use the net salary calculator, compare pay by role on our salaries in Kenya pages, update your CV with the free CV builder, and browse more salary and HR tools.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I resign in 24 hours in Kenya?
Yes, if you are willing to pay salary in lieu of the notice in your contract (section 36 of the Employment Act) or your employer agrees to waive it. Without one of those, you are expected to serve the notice, which is 28 days for monthly-paid staff unless your contract says more.
Do I have to give a reason for resigning?
No. The law does not require a reason. A short, polite reason can help keep the relationship good for references, but you can leave the reason box empty.
How much notice does a TSC teacher give to resign?
Under Regulation 157 of the TSC Code of Regulations for Teachers, 2015, a teacher on permanent and pensionable terms or on contract gives 30 days’ notice, and a teacher on probation gives 7 days, or pays one month’s or seven days’ salary in lieu. The letter goes to the TSC Secretary through the head of institution or the sub-county director.
How much notice does a civil servant give?
One month’s notice or one month’s salary in lieu, under section 78 of the Public Service Commission Act, 2017. The public service HR manual treats that salary as gross salary. Officers on contract follow their contract.
Is my information saved or sent anywhere?
No. The letter and the PDF are created in your browser. Your draft is kept only in this browser’s storage on your device, and the Clear button deletes it.
