How your CV is marked

The score is split into seven parts. Each one checks something that commonly gets a CV rejected before a person reads it closely.

What is checked Marks
Format a machine can read. Whether the text can be pulled out at all, and whether tables, two-column designs or text inside images will scramble it. 20
Sections. A short profile, work experience, education, skills and referees. 15
Bullets with numbers or results. Whether your bullet points say what changed because of your work, not just what your duties were. 20
Length. Too short to judge you, or so long that the important parts get lost. 10
Contact details. Email, a Kenyan phone number, and your town or LinkedIn near the top. 10
Match with the advert. Which of the advert’s most-used words appear in your CV. This only runs when you paste the advert. 20
Kenya checks. Personal details many Kenyan CVs still carry but employers do not need, such as an ID number, marital status or religion. 5

If you do not paste an advert, the keyword part is left out and your score is worked out from the other 80 marks, so you are not punished for skipping it. For the most useful result, paste the full advert, including the duties and the requirements.

Government and county jobs

When the advert you paste looks like a public service job, such as one from the Public Service Commission, a County Public Service Board, a ministry, a state corporation or one that mentions Chapter Six of the Constitution, the checker adds a list of the clearance documents these adverts most often ask for. They do not appear for private-sector or NGO adverts, because those employers rarely ask for them and listing them only adds clutter. Always follow the advert’s own list, since it can differ from one employer to the next.

Your CV stays on your device

Your file is opened and read by your own browser, on your phone or computer. It is not sent to our server, so we never see it, store it or keep a copy, and there is nothing to delete afterwards. The only thing we record is an anonymous count of how many times the checker is used each day, with no CV text, name or contact details attached. Because of this, the checker also works with a slow connection once the page has loaded.

What the score can and cannot tell you

The checker looks for patterns. It cannot judge whether you are the right person for the job, and different employers use different shortlisting software and rules. Treat the score as a checklist, not a verdict: a CV scoring 70 that is honest and specific will beat a stuffed CV scoring 95. Only add a keyword from the advert if it is true about you, because a panel will ask about it at the interview.

Old Word files (.doc) and scanned photos of a printed CV cannot be read. Save the file again as .docx or as a PDF from Word or Google Docs, or paste the text into the box instead.

Fixing the problems

Most fixes take a few minutes. You can rebuild your CV in a clean single-column layout with the free CV builder, write a matching letter with the cover letter generator, and keep track of where you have applied with the applied jobs tracker. If the advert came from a recruiter you do not know, run it through the fake job advert checker before you send anything. For overseas roles, check the agency first with the abroad jobs verifier.
