How county governments hire

Each of Kenya’s 47 counties hires its own staff. Under section 57 of the County Governments Act, every county has a County Public Service Board (CPSB) that creates and abolishes offices in the county public service, advertises vacancies, and appoints people to them. That is why a nurse at a county hospital, an ECDE teacher, a ward administrator or an agricultural extension officer is recruited by the county board, not by the national Public Service Commission or TSC.

Counties hire across almost every field, including health, early childhood education, youth polytechnics, agriculture and livestock, water, roads and public works, trade, finance and revenue, and administration. Some counties also run separate recruitment for their city or municipal boards, revenue boards and water companies.

Where county jobs are advertised

There is no single national portal for county jobs. Each board publishes adverts on its own website. Some use an online recruitment portal, such as Nakuru’s recruitment.nakuru.go.ke. Others post a PDF advert and ask for a paper application form, as Narok does with its NRK-CPSB (3) form. Adverts usually also appear in at least one national newspaper. Because the official sources are scattered, we check county board websites directly and add each open round we can verify, with a link to the board’s own advert.

This list covers the counties whose adverts we have verified. A county missing from this page may still have adverts we have not yet confirmed. If you know of one, check it on the county’s own website before applying.

Job groups and salary scales

County adverts give each post a job group, such as Job Group F for a clerical officer, H for many diploma-level entry posts and K for many degree-level officers. Some also use the board’s own grade code, such as CPSB 11. Unlike PSC adverts, county adverts often print the salary scale. Nakuru’s October 2026 adverts, for example, give KSh 20,560–26,460 a month for Clerical Officer II (Job Group F) and KSh 41,420–57,230 for officers in Job Group K.

A scale shows the entry point and the top of the grade, and you rise through it with annual increments. Allowances such as house allowance are paid on top of the basic scale, at rates that vary by county. The scales we have verified are in our salary database.

Who can apply

County jobs are open to all Kenyans who meet the requirements. Boards are, however, required to promote diversity, and adverts commonly encourage applications from people with disabilities, minorities and marginalised groups. Many adverts also ask for proof of residence or a local administrator’s letter for ward-level posts. Read each advert’s requirements line by line. A post that asks for KCSE C- (minus) plus proficiency in computer applications means both are compulsory.

How to apply for a county job

  1. Find the advert on the county board’s official website. Check the job group, terms of service (permanent and pensionable, or contract) and closing date.
  2. Follow the board’s method exactly: an online portal account, an emailed PDF, or a filled application form posted or hand-delivered to the board secretary. Some boards, such as Narok, say candidates should not attach documents to the form.
  3. Quote the advert reference number where one is given, and apply before the deadline. Late applications are not considered.
  4. If shortlisted, bring originals of your ID and certificates to the interview. Successful candidates are usually asked for Chapter Six clearances (KRA tax compliance, HELB, EACC, a Certificate of Good Conduct from the DCI and a credit reference bureau report).

Boards warn that canvassing leads to disqualification, and that presenting fake certificates is a criminal offence. No county board charges application fees. Anyone asking for money to secure a county job is committing fraud.
