Attachment vs Internship

An industrial attachment is a placement you do while still studying, because your course requires it. Universities, TVET institutions and colleges set the length, which is often between eight and twelve weeks, and usually give you an introduction letter and a logbook for your supervisor to fill. An internship is normally for people who have finished their studies. If you have already graduated, use our internship application letter generator instead.

How to Get an Attachment Placement

  1. Start early. Many organisations fill their attachment slots months before the long holiday. Apply as soon as you know your attachment dates.
  2. Get your introduction letter. Your institution’s industrial liaison or attachment office issues it. Most employers want to see it with your request.
  3. Target the right department. A specific department in your letter (for example “ICT department” or “Finance department”) helps HR route your request.
  4. Deliver it properly. Some organisations accept email; county governments and state agencies often ask you to drop the letter at their registry and get it stamped as received. Keep the stamped copy.
  5. Follow up after two weeks. A short, polite call or email to HR asking whether your request was received is fine.

What to Write in “What You Can Contribute”

This box is left for you because it is the part that gets you picked. Mention the units you have covered that relate to the department, any practical work or projects, and software or tools you can use. Keep it to three or four sentences in your own words. A student who writes “I have covered database systems and built a small stock-tracking app in MySQL for our class project” is more convincing than one who copies a generic paragraph.

Insurance and Stipends

Some employers ask whether your institution covers you with personal accident insurance during the attachment. If your institution does, say so in the optional box; if you are not sure, ask your attachment office before you write anything. Do not promise cover you do not have. Stipends for attachment students are at the employer’s discretion, so it is best not to ask for one in the request letter.

Documents to Attach

  • Your CV. Our free CV builder makes a clean one-page CV in minutes.
  • The introduction letter from your institution.
  • Copies of your student ID and national ID.
  • Your latest result slip or transcript, if the organisation asks for it.

Nobody should charge you to get an attachment. If someone asks for money to “secure a slot”, report it to DCI on 0800 722 203 and check the message with our fake job advert checker.

When you get a placement, reply quickly to confirm, keep your logbook up to date every day and ask your supervisor early about how they will assess you. A good attachment report and a referee from the placement can make your first job application much stronger.
