Jobs in Kisumu: Who Is Hiring, County Government Jobs and Where to Look

Kisumu is western Kenya’s largest city and the hub for jobs across the Nyanza region. Health, county government, education, insurance, distribution and NGO work all have a strong presence here, and many regional roles based in Kisumu cover the surrounding counties too. This guide to jobs in Kisumu shows who was hiring when we checked, how the county government and the main referral hospital recruit, what the law says about minimum pay in the city, and how to search smartly.
Who is hiring in Kisumu right now
When we checked our Kisumu jobs page on 27 October 2026, the open listings included:
| Employer | Role advertised | Listing closes on our board |
|---|---|---|
| ICS-SP Africa | Finance and Administration Officer | 25 November 2026 |
| Kenya Orient Insurance | Relationship Officer, Nyanza Region | 25 November 2026 |

The mix is typical of the city: NGO programme support, regional sales for insurers and pharmaceutical firms, manufacturing and quality roles, and health supply chain jobs. Listings change daily, so treat the table as a snapshot and check the live page. Always confirm the employer’s own closing date in the advert itself.
County government jobs: Kisumu County Public Service Board
The Kisumu County Public Service Board recruits for the County Government of Kisumu, the City of Kisumu and county entities such as the revenue board. Its vacancies page lists adverts for county departments, ECDE teachers, vocational and technical trainers, village administrators, health and agriculture staff, directors and committee members, followed by shortlists and interview schedules.
In April 2026 the board advertised a large round of permanent and pensionable posts, mostly in health, with applications closing on 19 May 2026. Rounds like this come a few times a year, and the shortlists are published on the same page, so check it weekly.
Tips for county applications:
- Use the board’s own application form from its downloads page if the advert asks for it.
- Attach exactly the documents listed, including clearances where required. Our clearance certificates helper explains how to get each one.
- Prepare for the panel with our county government interview questions.
The board’s offices are on Okore Road, Milimani, Kisumu (P.O. Box 7792-40100). Other county vacancies nationwide are on our county government jobs page.
Health jobs: JOOTRH and the wider sector
Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) is the region’s Level 6 referral hospital and one of the biggest employers in the city. In January 2026 it advertised 238 contract positions, from specialist doctors and 53 registered nurses to clerical officers, drivers, cooks, porters and ICT assistants, with applications closing on 13 February 2026, as The Kenya Times reported. The hospital lists openings on its careers page.
That advert shows how wide hospital hiring is: nearly 60 of the posts were support roles such as clerical officers, porters, artisans, ICT assistants, accountants, cooks and drivers. If you are a nurse or clinician, read our guide on nursing licensing in Kenya and keep your practising licence current, because health adverts ask for it. What the law says about pay in Kisumu
Kisumu is one of the five cities in the top wage zone of the Regulation of Wages (General) (Amendment) Order, 2026 (Legal Notice 108 of 2026), alongside Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru and Eldoret. So the legal minimum in Kisumu is the same as in Nairobi. From 1 May 2026 the basic monthly minimums in the city zone, excluding housing allowance, include:
| Occupation (from the order) | Basic minimum per month (KSh) |
|---|---|
| General labourer, cleaner, day watchman | 18,047.40 |
| Waiter, cook, turnboy | 19,491.33 |
| Night watchman | 20,133.72 |
| General clerk, receptionist, storekeeper | 27,796.51 |
| Driver (medium-sized vehicle) | 30,634.69 |
Our minimum wage guide covers every category, and the salary checker shows what employers are offering in real listings.
How to job hunt in Kisumu
- Search Kisumu and Nyanza together. Many “Nyanza region” sales and field roles are based in Kisumu but cover Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori and Kisii.
- Watch the institutions. The county board, JOOTRH and universities and research centres in the area post on their own sites first.
- Network in person. Kisumu’s professional circles are smaller than Nairobi’s. Industry meet-ups, church and alumni groups still move jobs.
- Tailor your CV for each role. Use our CV builder and track every application in the applied jobs tracker.
- Check every advert. Never pay to apply, and test suspicious posts with the fake job advert checker.
If you are open to moving within Kenya, compare with our guides to jobs in Nakuru and jobs in Mombasa. Many county and parastatal applications now run on eCitizen; Business Radar explains how to log in to eCitizen.
