How to Get a Job at KRA: Graduate Trainee, Internship and Professional Roles

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) recruits very differently from the disciplined services. There are no recruitment grounds, height checks or sub-county centres. Everything happens on an online e-recruitment system, and competition is decided by qualifications, a complete profile and, for shortlisted candidates, interviews and clearances. This guide covers the three realistic ways in, based on KRA’s own published adverts. For whether KRA has a vacancy open today, see our KRA jobs page.

Why KRA recruits on its own

KRA is the national agency that collects taxes and customs duties. As a state agency with its own board, it hires directly through its careers page at kra.go.ke/careers instead of going through the Public Service Commission. Its adverts are also carried by the Government Advertising Agency on gaa.go.ke and in MyGov, which is a useful way to confirm an advert is genuine.

Route 1: the Graduate Trainee intake

This is the biggest single entry point for young graduates. In August 2025, KRA advertised 200 Graduate Trainee vacancies (reference GT/8/25) in the same notice as 50 driver posts and seven specialist officer roles in data, security operations, application support and knowledge management. Applications closed on 8 September 2025 at 23:59.

The public notice itself did not list the trainee entry grades; it directed applicants to the full job description on KRA’s careers page. Because that description is only shown inside the recruitment window, we do not repeat requirements we cannot currently check. When the next intake opens, read its job description line by line, especially any minimum KCSE grades in specific subjects, the list of accepted degree courses, and the age limit.

Route 2: the internship and pupillage programme

KRA’s January to December 2025 internship advert, published in December 2024, is a good example of what to expect:

  • Open to Kenyan citizens aged not more than 35 by their next birthday.
  • For fresh graduates with a first degree or diploma completed within a set window (for the 2025 intake, between January 2023 and December 2024).
  • Applicants must be available full time for the 12 months and must not have done another internship or worked in their field since graduating.
  • A wide range of disciplines, from finance, economics and data analytics to law, ICT, engineering, journalism, security and records management.
  • A monthly stipend of KSh 25,000 for degree holders and KSh 18,000 for diploma holders, subject to statutory deductions.

KRA states that the internship does not guarantee employment afterwards. Selected interns had to provide proof of personal accident insurance cover, a certificate of good conduct, and copies of their KRA PIN certificate, SHA and NSSF details, ID card and bank details. A separate pupillage track takes Kenya School of Law students pursuing the Advocates Training Programme.

Route 3: professional and management posts

Experienced professionals apply for specific roles, such as the March 2026 manager adverts covering digital communication, big data operations, continuous audit and database administration. These typically ask for a relevant degree, professional certification where it applies (CPA, CISA and similar) and several years of experience. Each role’s requirements are in its own job description, so tailor your application to it. Browse accounting and finance jobs and IT jobs to build the experience these posts ask for.

Applying on the e-recruitment system

KRA’s published guidelines describe the same steps in every advert:

  1. Go to erecruitment.kra.go.ke, click “Register” and use a personal email address, not a work one.
  2. Confirm your email from the message the system sends you.
  3. Log in to open the “Applicant Cockpit”, then complete “My Profile” under “Candidate Profile”, attaching documents in PDF. Finish with “Overview and Release” and tick the confirmation box.
  4. Under “Employment Opportunities”, open “Job Search”, click “Start” and select the vacancy.
  5. Click “Apply”, complete every mandatory field, accept the Data Privacy Statement and click “Send Application Now”.

Do the profile work early. Uploading certificates as PDFs and filling in your history takes longer than most people expect, and the system is busiest on the last day. Queries go to kracareers@kra.go.ke.

Clearances for successful candidates

KRA’s adverts ask successful candidates for the Chapter Six documents: a valid certificate of good conduct from the DCI, a HELB clearance certificate, a tax compliance certificate from KRA and a current report from an approved credit reference bureau. A tax agency will look closely at your own tax record, so file your returns and clear any arrears now. Our documents guide shows how to get each clearance.

Who gets contacted

Only shortlisted and successful applicants are contacted. KRA describes itself as an equal opportunity employer and encourages applications from people with disabilities, marginalised groups and minorities. It also warns that presenting fake certificates or incorrect information is a criminal offence, and that canvassing or misrepresenting qualifications leads to automatic disqualification.

Pay

KRA’s adverts do not publish salaries for graduate trainees or officers, so we do not quote them. The only official figures in recent adverts are the internship stipends above. To see how tax would apply to any salary you are offered, try our PAYE calculator.

Scam alert

KRA states that it does not charge any application, processing, interviewing or other fee at any stage. KRA jobs are attractive, which makes them a favourite bait for fraud. Report suspicious offers to KRA’s corruption reporting line, 0726 984 668, or corruptionreporting@kra.go.ke. See our guide to spotting fake job adverts.
