How to Join the National Police Service in Kenya: Constable Requirements and Selection

Police constable recruitment in Kenya happens in a single day at each constituency centre, so small mistakes cost you the whole intake: a missing birth certificate, the wrong grade in English, or a height just under the minimum. This guide explains the constable route into the National Police Service (NPS) step by step, based on the National Police Service Commission’s most recent advert, published on 19 September 2025. To see whether an intake is open right now, use our police recruitment status page.

The NPSC hires, not the police stations

The National Police Service includes the Kenya Police Service and the Administration Police Service. Under Article 246 of the Constitution, the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) is the body that recruits and appoints people into the Service. That matters for one simple reason: no OCS, MP, chief or “officer friend” can enlist you. Only the Commission’s published process can.

How often constables are recruited

Constable recruitment is not annual. The 2025 intake was advertised in the Daily Nation on 19 September 2025 and in The Standard on 20 September 2025, an addendum correcting and adding centres followed on 30 September, and the exercise itself ran in early October 2025. In September 2025 the Commission also adopted a staged roadmap towards recruiting 10,000 constables, but it has not published dates for any further intake. Watch npsc.go.ke rather than social media for the next one.

Entry requirements in the 2025 advert

The Commission listed these minimums for anyone wishing to be trained as a constable:

  • Kenyan citizen holding a Kenya national ID card.
  • Aged 18 to 28 years.
  • KCSE minimum mean grade of D+ (plus), with at least D+ in English or Kiswahili.
  • Physically and medically fit.
  • Minimum height of 5ft 8in for men and 5ft 3in for women.
  • No criminal record and no pending criminal charges.
  • Women must not be pregnant at recruitment or during the entire training period.

Notice how the height bar is higher than for several other uniformed services. A man who would clear the KDF minimum of 5ft 3in can still fall short here. NYS graduates who meet these requirements were encouraged to apply, and the addendum clarified that NYS graduates would be recruited only within their own counties.

Getting the application form

Unlike some recruiters, the NPSC requires a filled form on the day. In 2025 the prescribed form could be downloaded from npsc.go.ke, administrationpolice.go.ke, nationalpolice.go.ke, dci.go.ke, kenyapolice.go.ke or mygov.go.ke, collected from the nearest Huduma Centre, or filled and downloaded through the Commission’s portal at prs.npsc.go.ke. The form is free everywhere. If someone sells you a “police form”, you are already dealing with a fraudster.

What to carry on recruitment day

Candidates had to present themselves at the designated centre in their constituency, between 8:00am and 5:00pm on the listed date, with originals and copies of:

  1. Academic certificates and testimonials.
  2. Kenya national ID card.
  3. Birth certificate.
  4. An NYS discharge certificate with a conduct rating of at least “Good”, if you are an NYS graduate.

The advert promised that all originals are returned before you leave the centre. The birth certificate is the item people most often forget, so put it in your folder now. If yours is lost, apply for a replacement through the civil registration office early, because it takes time.

Inside a recruitment centre

Based on the advert, the process on the day covers document verification, physical fitness tests and medical checks, all done on site. Candidates who pass are later called for training at the police training colleges. Because the exercise happens in one day per centre, there is no second chance if you arrive late or at the wrong venue. Check the centre list (and the addendum) for your constituency before the day.

Preparing your body and your papers

  • Fitness: physical tests are part of selection. Build running endurance over weeks, not days.
  • Height: get measured accurately at a health facility so you know where you stand.
  • Grades: confirm both your mean grade and your English or Kiswahili grade on the actual certificate, not a results slip.
  • Record: if you have ever been charged, make sure the case is concluded, since a pending charge disqualifies you.

Pay and allowances

The 2025 advert did not state a constable’s salary, and we have not found a current official NPSC pay schedule for new constables to quote. We therefore do not publish a figure. Our salary database only lists pay we can verify from official documents.

Bribery, false information and how to report

The Commission’s advert warned that police recruitment is free and that offering a bribe to influence it is a crime under section 25 of the NPSC Act. Giving false information is also an offence, with a fine of up to KSh 200,000, up to two years in prison, or both. Report malpractice at the nearest police station or on 0709 099 000, 999, 911, 112 or the DCI’s #FichuaKwaDCI line 0800 722 203. Fake “shortlists” and “medical fee” requests appear after every intake; see our guide to fake job adverts.

Civilian jobs in the Service

The NPSC also advertises civilian posts and senior roles, which follow a normal application process rather than a recruitment ground. These appear on the Commission’s vacancies page and, when we can verify them, on our government jobs tracker.
