KWS Ranger Recruitment Guide: Requirements, County Selection and Training
Few government jobs attract as many fake adverts as Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) ranger recruitment. In 2025 alone, KWS publicly disowned online “ranger portals” and viral posters promising hundreds of posts. This guide sets out what a genuine KWS recruitment looks like, based on the Service’s last mass ranger advert in March 2024, so you can prepare properly and recognise a fake the moment you see one.
Is KWS recruiting rangers now?
When we checked the KWS careers page on 19 October 2026, it carried no ranger recruitment. The page stresses that all official recruitment is communicated through the KWS website, its verified social media accounts and mainstream media. In June 2025 KWS warned against fake online recruitment portals, and in August 2025 it said plainly that no recruitment was ongoing and that a viral notice for 150 game ranger posts was fraudulent. So, until KWS itself announces an intake, treat any ranger “vacancy” as suspect.
Who KWS hires
KWS is the state corporation that manages Kenya’s national parks and reserves and protects wildlife. Its recruitment falls into three groups:
- Rangers: the uniformed field force, recruited in large county-based exercises.
- Cadets (Assistant Warden I): officer-level entrants recruited alongside rangers in 2024 (150 cadets to 1,350 rangers). The 2024 cadet advert (KWS/01/2024, Job Grade 9) asked for a bachelor’s degree with at least second class honours, lower division, in fields such as wildlife management, natural resources, environmental science, range management, veterinary medicine or criminology, an age of 28 or below, and nine months of paramilitary training. Cadets applied in writing or by email to the Director General rather than turning up at a county centre.
- Professional staff: roles such as supply chain, communication, veterinary and aviation posts, advertised individually on the careers page with detailed job descriptions.
KWS also offers industrial attachment and international volunteer placements, listed separately on its careers page.
The 2024 ranger advert in detail
The March 2024 advert (reference KWS/02/2024) declared 1,350 Ranger posts at KWS Job Grade 15, recruited alongside cadets in an exercise of 1,500 posts in total. Applicants had to:
- Be Kenyan citizens holding a Kenyan national ID card or passport.
- Hail from the county where recruitment was taking place.
- Hold a KCSE mean grade of at least D (plain), or an equivalent from a recognised examination body.
- Be aged 18 to 26 years.
- Be physically and medically fit.
- Have no criminal record.
The exercise ran county by county from 15 to 19 April 2024, as KWS reported in its own update on the recruitment, with candidates told to turn up in running gear.
The advert added that NYS graduates who met these requirements were encouraged to apply. Unlike the police and prisons adverts, the 2024 KWS ranger advert did not publish a minimum height. So if a “KWS” poster quotes a height rule, check it against an official KWS notice before you believe it, because fakes often borrow details from police and prisons adverts.
The county rule
Ranger recruitment is shared out by county, and you must present yourself in the county you come from. This spreads posts across the country and means you cannot shop around for a less crowded venue. Your national ID is the usual proof of where you hail from, so make sure it is in order.
How the 2024 application worked
The 2024 advert set out four steps:
- Get the prescribed application form, free of charge, from the nearest KWS national park or station, or download it from kws.go.ke.
- Fill in the form completely.
- Attach copies of your academic certificates, testimonials and national ID or passport.
- Present the filled form and attachments at the recruitment centre, together with the originals for verification.
So there was no online portal for rangers. The online “KWS portals” that appeared in 2025 asked people to enter personal details and share links, which is the opposite of how the Service recruited.
Selection and training
At the centre, documents are verified and candidates are assessed for fitness. The 2024 advert stated that successful candidates must complete six months of mandatory paramilitary training before being deployed to the field. KWS trains its rangers at its own Law Enforcement Academy at Manyani. Ranger work is physical field duty, so treat fitness preparation seriously.
Pay
The 2024 advert gave the grade (KWS Job Grade 15) but not a salary figure, and we have not found an official KWS pay table for rangers to quote. Be careful with posters that list exact KSh salaries for ranger posts. The fake August 2025 notice claimed rangers would earn KSh 19,220 to KSh 23,130 a month and entry-level wardens KSh 32,700 to KSh 42,690, with “recruitment” from 8 to 18 September 2025. KWS said none of it came from the Service.
How to spot a fake KWS advert
- It is not on kws.go.ke or the verified KWS social accounts, and not carried by mainstream media.
- It asks you to register on a website that is not kws.go.ke, or to forward the link to others.
- It asks for any payment, including for “forms” or “medicals”. The 2024 form was free.
- It promises a large number of posts with reporting dates but no reference number.
- It tells you to share the form with WhatsApp groups or friends before your application “goes through”. That is engagement bait, not recruitment.

Other wildlife jobs worth watching
County governments sometimes recruit their own game rangers for county-managed reserves, through the county public service board, with different rules from KWS. These appear on our county jobs page when we can verify them. You can also browse agriculture and environment jobs and NGO jobs, where conservation organisations advertise.
Get ready for the next intake
Keep your KCSE certificate, ID and testimonials together, stay fit, turn on job alerts, and check the parastatal jobs list. For how public recruitment works overall, read how to apply for government jobs in Kenya.
