How to Explain a Career Gap on Your CV: Kenyan Examples That Work

If you are wondering how to explain a career gap on your CV, the short answer is: name it briefly, put it in the right place, show what you did or learned, and move on to why you are ready now. A gap is not a reason to be rejected. Unexplained gaps cause problems because recruiters fill the silence with guesses. This guide gives Kenyan examples for the most common reasons (maternity and childcare, redundancy, illness, caring for a relative, further studies, running a business or working abroad), plus what to say when the interview panel asks.
Why gaps worry Kenyan recruiters, and why they shouldn’t scare you
Recruiters screening hundreds of CVs look for a continuous story. A missing year raises three questions: Were you dismissed? Are your skills out of date? Will you leave again soon? Your job is to answer those questions before they are asked.
In Kenya the issue comes up most often in formal applications. Public service and parastatal forms ask for your full employment history with dates, and Chapter Six vetting compares what you declare with the records. Hiding a gap by stretching dates is the worst option: it can be treated as giving false information. An honest one-line explanation is always safer.
Where to put the gap on your CV
- Gaps under six months usually need no explanation. Use years (2023–2025) rather than months for older roles if that is your format throughout, but don’t invent continuity.
- Longer gaps get their own short entry in the work history, in date order, like a job. Example: “Jan 2024 – Mar 2025: Career break (full-time caregiver to a family member)”.
- Gaps where you did something useful (a course, a business, volunteering) are listed as that activity, with one or two results.
- Use the cover letter for one sentence of context, never a paragraph of apology. Our cover letter generator gives you a clean structure.
Sample lines for common reasons
| Reason for the gap | CV line you can adapt | What to add |
|---|---|---|
| Maternity and childcare | Career break, 2023–2025: full-time parent | Any course, chama treasurer role, freelance or volunteer work |
| Redundancy or contract ended | Job search and upskilling, Jun 2024 – Feb 2025, after the Nairobi branch closed | Short courses or certificates finished, consulting work |
| Illness or recovery | Career break for health reasons, now fully fit for work | Nothing more. You don’t have to disclose a diagnosis |
| Caring for a relative | Family caregiver, 2024 | Organisation, budgeting, handling hospital and insurance paperwork |
| Further studies | CPA Intermediate Level, KASNEB, 2024–2025 | Papers passed and dates |
| Running a business | Owner, small agrovet shop, Machakos, 2023–2025 | Turnover range, staff, what you learned |
| Working abroad | Domestic/hospitality work, Saudi Arabia, 2022–2024 | Skills, languages, reason for return |
| Waiting after graduation | Graduate job search and attachment, 2025 | Attachment, internships, online courses |
Keep each line factual and positive. Don’t blame a former employer, even if the exit was unfair. If you were made redundant, say so: redundancy is about the position, not about you. Our guide to redundancy in Kenya explains the process if you need to know your rights.
Mothers returning to work
Many Kenyan women take a longer break after maternity leave, which under the Employment Act is three months with full pay. Some stay home with the child or wait for school-going age. If that is you:
- Call it a career break or “full-time parent”. Recruiters understand it. The Employment Act also prohibits discrimination on the grounds of pregnancy, so a well-run employer won’t hold it against you. See our guide to discrimination at work.
- Show you stayed current: a refresher course, a professional body’s CPD points, helping in a family business or your chama’s books.
- At interview, focus on the plan, not the childcare details. “My childcare is arranged and I can start on the 1st” is enough.

What to say at the interview
Panels often ask, “I see a gap between 2023 and 2025. What were you doing?” Use a three-part answer:
- The reason, in one sentence. “My contract ended when the project closed, and I took time to care for my father during his treatment.”
- What you did with the time. “I completed a Data Analysis certificate and helped my brother set up stock records for his hardware.”
- Why you are ready now. “He’s recovered, I’m available full-time, and this role uses exactly the reporting skills I’ve been sharpening.”
Practise it out loud until it takes under 40 seconds. Our common interview questions guide and the STAR method guide help with the follow-up questions.
Fill the gap now if you are still in it
If you’re between jobs right now, a few low-cost moves will give you something to write on your CV:
- a short course or certificate in your field;
- volunteering with a church, school board, NGO or county programme;
- freelance or gig work. See our online gigs hub for genuine options and red flags, and Business Radar’s guide to tax on online income in Kenya so your side income is declared properly; and
- updating your LinkedIn profile so the gap reads the same way everywhere.
When your CV is ready, run it through the CV checker and rebuild it in the CV builder if the layout is weak. For the full structure, see how to write a CV in Kenya.
Frequently asked questions
Should I explain a career gap on my CV?
Yes, for gaps over about six months. Give it a one-line entry in your work history with dates and a brief, neutral reason, and add anything useful you did during that time.
Do I have to say I was sick?
No. "Career break for health reasons, now fully fit for work" is enough. You don't have to disclose a diagnosis on a CV or at interview.
Can I change my dates to hide a gap?
Don't. Public and many private employers check dates against references and records, and false information can disqualify you or lead to dismissal later.
How do I explain a gap after maternity leave?
Call it a career break or full-time parenting, show any courses or work you did, and confirm you are available. Pregnancy-related discrimination is prohibited by the Employment Act.
What if I was fired?
Keep it short and honest without blaming anyone: say the role ended, state one lesson learned, and move to what you've done since and why you fit this job.
