How to Write a CV in Kenya That Gets Shortlisted (2026 Guide)

Knowing how to write a CV in Kenya is the single most useful job-search skill you can build. Most employers in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu and beyond screen CVs in seconds, and many larger organisations now pass them through software before a person ever reads them. This guide walks you through a format that works for Kenyan employers, what to put in each section and the common mistakes that quietly get good candidates rejected.

What Kenyan employers look for in a CV

A recruiter reading your CV is trying to answer three questions quickly: can this person do the job, have they done something similar before, and will they fit the team? Everything on the page should help answer those questions. Kenyan hiring managers also tend to check basics that are less common elsewhere, such as your county or town (for commuting), your professional registration (for example ICPAK, the Nursing Council or the Engineers Board of Kenya) and whether you can supply clearance documents if offered the job.

The best CV format for jobs in Kenya

For most jobs, use a reverse-chronological CV: your latest role first, then earlier roles. Keep it to two pages if you have under ten years of experience, and up to three pages for senior roles. Graduates and interns should aim for one strong page.

Recommended sections, in order

  1. Name and contact details: phone number, a professional email address, town or county, and your LinkedIn profile link.
  2. Professional summary: three or four lines describing who you are, your years of experience and your strongest skills.
  3. Key skills: eight to twelve skills matched to the job advert.
  4. Work experience: job title, employer, location, dates (month and year) and four to six achievement bullets per role.
  5. Education: highest qualification first, with institution and year.
  6. Professional qualifications and memberships, such as CPA, CIFA, HRM or ICT certifications.
  7. Referees: two or three, ideally including a former supervisor.

You do not need to include your date of birth, ID number, marital status, religion or tribe. Under the Data Protection Act, 2019, you can keep sensitive personal data off your CV, and an employer can ask for ID details later when they actually need them.

How to write work experience that stands out

Weak CVs list duties. Strong CVs show results. Compare these two bullets for the same sales job:

  • Weak: Responsible for selling products to customers.
  • Strong: Grew my route’s monthly sales from KSh 1.2 million to KSh 1.6 million in eight months by adding 40 new retail outlets in Kiambu.

Start each bullet with an action verb (led, built, reduced, trained, negotiated), add a number wherever you honestly can, and show the effect of your work. If you cannot share exact figures, use scale instead: the size of the team you supervised, the number of clients you handled each week or the budget you managed.

Tailor your CV for each job

Read the job advert line by line and highlight the skills and requirements. Then make sure your summary, skills list and top bullets use the same words where they truly apply to you. If an advert for an accountant asks for “IFRS reporting” and “iTax filing”, those exact phrases should appear on your CV if you have done that work. Tailoring takes ten minutes and is the main difference between CVs that get calls and those that do not.

Getting past applicant tracking systems (ATS)

Many international NGOs, banks and multinationals in Kenya use applicant tracking systems that read CVs automatically. To stay readable:

  • Save as PDF unless the advert asks for Word.
  • Use standard headings such as “Work Experience” and “Education”.
  • Avoid putting key information inside tables, text boxes, headers or images.
  • Use a clean font such as Calibri, Arial or Garamond at 10 to 12 points.
  • Name the file clearly, for example Jane-Wanjiku-CV-Accountant.pdf.

Referees: who to list and how

Kenyan employers do call referees, often before the final offer. Choose people who have supervised your work recently and tell them in advance that they may be contacted. List their name, title, organisation, phone number and email. Avoid listing relatives. If you are a fresh graduate, a lecturer who supervised your project or the supervisor from your attachment is a good choice.

Common CV mistakes Kenyan recruiters see

  • Using one generic CV for every job.
  • Long objectives such as “To work in a dynamic organisation”. Replace them with a specific summary.
  • Spelling errors, especially in company names and your own email address.
  • Unexplained gaps. A short line such as “Career break: caregiving” or “Freelance bookkeeping” is better than silence.
  • Photos, unless the advert asks for one.
  • Inflating qualifications. Employers increasingly verify certificates with institutions and professional bodies, and a false claim can cost you the job later.

A simple CV checklist before you click apply

  1. Does your summary mention the job title you are applying for?
  2. Do your top bullets match the advert’s main requirements?
  3. Are dates, phone number and email correct?
  4. Is it two pages or less (unless senior)?
  5. Have you saved it as a PDF with a clear file name?
  6. Have you written a short cover letter if the advert asks for one?

Frequently asked questions

How many pages should a CV be in Kenya?

One page for graduates and interns, two pages for most professionals, and up to three pages for senior or highly technical roles.

Should I include my ID number or date of birth on my CV?

No. They are not needed to assess you. Employers can request ID details at the offer stage.

Should I put a photo on my CV in Kenya?

Only if the job advert asks for one. Most employers prefer CVs without photos.

Is it better to send my CV as Word or PDF?

Send a PDF unless the advert specifically asks for a Word document, because a PDF keeps your layout intact.
