Hands-on IT at diploma level

A Diploma in Information Technology is a practical two to three year course at national polytechnics, technical institutes and private colleges, covering computer hardware, operating systems, networking, programming basics, databases and web design. It produces the technicians who install, support and repair the computers and networks that offices, schools and businesses rely on every day.

Jobs for diploma holders

  • ICT support technician and helpdesk officer in companies, schools, hospitals and county offices
  • Network and structured cabling technician with ICT contractors
  • Fibre installation and maintenance technician with internet service providers
  • Computer repair and maintenance technician
  • Data entry and records officer in organisations digitising their paperwork

Entry requirements

Public TVET places are applied for through KUCCPS, usually with a KCSE mean grade of C- (minus). Certificate holders in ICT can progress to the diploma. Many colleges now deliver competency-based programmes assessed through TVET CDACC; make sure the college is accredited by the TVET Authority.

Certifications that help

Employers like to see entry-level certifications alongside the diploma, such as CompTIA A+ for support, CCNA for networking, or vendor training in fibre splicing and testing. These are especially useful in contracting firms that bid for jobs requiring certified staff. Building and repairing computers for friends and local businesses is also good experience to describe at interview.

Where the jobs are

Fibre rollout by internet providers and the expansion of CCTV, access control and structured cabling in new buildings have created many technician roles, often with on-the-job training for people who already have a solid IT foundation. Willingness to travel and to work at heights or in the field is often required. A driving licence helps.

Progression

Technicians progress to senior technician, team leader and network or systems administrator roles. Many diploma holders later complete a BSc in IT or a BBIT part-time, often with credit transfer, which opens IT officer and management posts. Specialising in security, cloud or networking through certifications is another strong path.
