Running the systems organisations depend on

A BSc in Information Technology is more applied than computer science, focusing on networks, systems administration, databases, web development, IT security and IT service management. Almost every organisation in Kenya, from county governments and hospitals to banks, schools and NGOs, needs people who can keep systems running, secure data and support users. That breadth gives IT graduates a large pool of potential employers.

Typical roles

  • IT support officer, helpdesk analyst and ICT officer
  • Network administrator and systems administrator
  • Database administrator and web developer
  • Information security analyst and IT auditor
  • ERP and business systems support in large organisations

Entry requirements

Places are allocated through KUCCPS with a minimum C+ mean grade and usually a good grade in Mathematics. Diploma holders in IT can often join with credit transfer.

Certifications that employers ask for

IT is not a licensed profession in Kenya, so certifications often play the role of a licence. Commonly requested ones include CCNA for networking, CompTIA certifications for support and security, Microsoft and Linux administrator certifications, ITIL for service management, and cloud certifications. For IT audit roles, CISA is widely recognised. The Computer Society of Kenya provides professional membership and events.

Public sector IT

Government ICT posts are advertised by the Public Service Commission and county public service boards, and the ICT Authority sets standards for government systems. Data protection is now a big area following the Data Protection Act, 2019, which created the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner, and IT staff are often involved in compliance work.

Getting hired

Hands-on experience is crucial: set up a home lab, volunteer to manage a school or church network, or take attachments where you can configure real equipment. Recruiters like candidates who can explain clearly how they fixed a problem. Many graduates start in support roles and specialise within two or three years.

Career path

IT officers progress to senior systems or network administrator, IT manager and head of IT. Security, cloud and data skills currently command the strongest demand and the best pay, and many IT professionals also find remote work once experienced.
