Kenya's tech job market for CS graduates

Computer science covers programming, algorithms, data structures, databases, operating systems, networks, software engineering and, increasingly, machine learning. Nairobi is one of Africa's main technology hubs, with fintechs, telcos, banks, software houses, startups and the regional offices of global firms all hiring. The market rewards demonstrable skill more than grades, which is good news for graduates who build things.

Roles to target

  • Software developer or engineer (back end, front end, mobile or full stack)
  • Data analyst, data engineer and, with further study, data scientist or machine learning engineer
  • Cloud, DevOps and site reliability engineer
  • Cybersecurity analyst and information security officer
  • QA and test engineer, a common entry point into software teams

Entry requirements

Places are allocated through KUCCPS, typically with a C+ mean grade and good grades in Mathematics and Physics; competitive universities set higher cut-offs. Some bootcamps and online programmes also lead to tech jobs, but the degree remains important for many employers, especially banks and the public sector.

No licence, so prove your skills

There is no statutory licensing body for software developers in Kenya. The Computer Society of Kenya is a professional association that offers membership and events. Employers instead rely on technical tests, take-home assignments and your portfolio, so a GitHub profile with real projects, contributions to open source, or apps you have shipped matters more than your transcript. Certifications from cloud providers (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) or security bodies can help for specialist roles.

Getting the first job

Internships and graduate programmes at banks, telcos and larger tech firms are competitive but valuable. Hackathons, developer communities and meetups are where many junior hires are found. Remote work for overseas companies is a real option once you have experience; our guide to remote jobs from Kenya covers how to find and secure them, and a strong LinkedIn profile helps recruiters find you.

Career path

Developers typically progress from junior to mid-level and senior engineer over five or so years, then to tech lead, engineering manager or architect. Pay varies more by skill and employer type than in most professions, so compare offers carefully and look at total compensation.
