Technicians who make projects happen
A Diploma in Civil Engineering trains engineering technicians in surveying, building construction, roads, water and drainage, materials testing and technical drawing. Courses run for about three years at national polytechnics and technical training institutes. Diploma holders are the people who set out works, supervise labour, test materials and keep site records, and contractors and public agencies hire them in large numbers.
Registration
Engineering technologists and technicians are registered by the Kenya Engineering Technology Registration Board (KETRB) under the Engineering Technology Act, 2016. Registration is increasingly asked for by public employers and larger contractors, so apply once you have completed your studies and any required experience.
Jobs for diploma holders
- Site technician, site supervisor and foreman with building and roads contractors
- Works officer and inspector in county governments and roads agencies
- Materials and soils laboratory technician
- Survey assistant and draughtsperson in consulting firms
- Water and sanitation technician with water companies and NGOs
Entry requirements
Public TVET places are applied for through KUCCPS, usually requiring a KCSE mean grade of C- (minus) with passes in Mathematics and Physics or a related science. Certificate holders in building or civil engineering can progress to the diploma.
What employers look for
Practical competence is everything at technician level: setting out with a total station or level, reading drawings, checking concrete and reinforcement, and keeping accurate site diaries. AutoCAD skills and a valid driving licence widen your options. Safety awareness is increasingly checked, and a short occupational safety course is a useful addition.
Career growth
Experienced technicians become site agents, clerks of works and construction managers. Many diploma holders later join a university for a BSc or a BTech in civil engineering, often with credit transfer, which leads to graduate engineer registration with the Engineers Board of Kenya. Others specialise in surveying, materials testing or water engineering through higher diplomas and short courses.
