Machines, plants and production
Mechanical engineering deals with the design, manufacture and maintenance of machines and thermal systems: engines, pumps, boilers, refrigeration, production lines and vehicles. In Kenya mechanical engineers work in manufacturing, food and beverage processing, sugar and tea factories, energy plants, construction equipment, automotive firms and building services. The degree takes five years at universities accredited by the Engineers Board of Kenya.
Registration
The Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) registers graduate engineers and later professional engineers after supervised experience and a professional assessment. The Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) provides membership and continuing development. Some roles, such as inspecting boilers and pressure vessels, also require specific authorisations under occupational safety law.
Typical jobs
- Maintenance engineer in factories, processing plants and hospitals
- Production or process engineer on manufacturing lines
- Projects engineer installing and commissioning new equipment
- Building services (HVAC and plumbing) engineer in consultancies and contractors
- Fleet, plant and equipment engineer in transport, mining and construction
Entry requirements
Places are allocated through KUCCPS, typically needing a C+ mean grade and strong grades in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry; actual cut-off points are usually higher.
Getting hired
Practical experience counts heavily. Attachments in a factory workshop, with an equipment dealer or on a construction site give you real examples for interviews. Skills in CAD (SolidWorks or AutoCAD), maintenance planning, root-cause analysis and basic electrical knowledge are attractive, especially for maintenance roles that combine mechanical and electrical work. Large manufacturers and multinationals run graduate engineer programmes that are worth watching for each year.
Career path
Engineers often move from graduate engineer to maintenance or production engineer, then engineering manager or plant manager. Professional engineer registration is the key step for senior and consulting roles. Many mechanical engineers broaden into operations, supply chain or project management, and a master's or professional certification in maintenance, energy management or project management supports that move.
