Building the country's infrastructure

Civil engineering covers the design and construction of roads, bridges, buildings, water supply, sewerage, dams and railways. In Kenya, steady public investment in roads, housing, water and energy, alongside private real estate, keeps civil engineers in demand. The BSc in Civil Engineering is a five-year degree at accredited universities, and accreditation matters: the Engineers Board of Kenya only registers graduates of programmes it recognises, so confirm a programme's status before you enrol.

Registration as an engineer

The Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK), established under the Engineers Act, 2011, registers graduate engineers, and later professional engineers after a period of supervised experience and a professional assessment. Only registered professional engineers can take legal responsibility for engineering work and sign off designs. The Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) is the professional membership body and runs mentorship and continuing development.

Typical roles

  • Graduate or site engineer with contractors on roads, buildings and water projects
  • Design engineer in consulting firms working on structures, highways or water
  • Engineer in public agencies such as roads authorities, water companies and county works departments
  • Quality, materials testing and project engineer roles in construction and manufacturing

Entry requirements

Places are allocated through KUCCPS, usually with a C+ mean grade and strong grades in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry; competitive cut-offs are typically well above the minimum.

Getting the first job

Graduate engineers often start on site, where practical experience is gained fastest. Proficiency with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, structural analysis software and project scheduling tools is expected, and a valid driving licence helps. Keep a logbook of the experience you gain, because it is used when you apply to become a professional engineer. Contractors registered with the National Construction Authority recruit heavily when large projects start.

Career path

Engineers progress from graduate to project engineer, resident engineer and project manager, or into design leadership in consultancies. Becoming a registered professional engineer is the key milestone for senior posts. A master's in structural, water, transport or geotechnical engineering, or in project management, supports specialist and leadership careers.
