How to Write a Clinical Officer CV in Kenya That Gets Interviews

Clinical officers are hired by county governments, mission hospitals, private clinics, NGOs and research programmes, and each of them screens CVs in a similar way. They want proof that you are registered and licensed, a clear picture of the clinical areas you have worked in, and evidence that you can run a clinic or department with little supervision. This guide explains how to set out a clinical officer CV for Kenyan employers. The free CV builder handles the layout.

Registration and Licence on Line One

County vacancy notices for clinical officers require a certificate of registration and a valid practising licence from the Clinical Officers Council, along with your diploma or degree in clinical medicine and surgery. Put your registration number and licence status directly under your name. If you hold a specialty, such as anaesthesia, ENT, orthopaedics, reproductive health or paediatrics, add it to your headline too, because specialist posts are advertised separately and recruiters search for those words.

Recommended Layout

  1. Name, phone, email, town, registration number and licence status.
  2. Profile: qualification (diploma, higher diploma or degree), years of practice and your main clinical areas.
  3. Clinical experience: latest first, with facility, level, department and dates.
  4. Education: diploma, higher diploma or degree in clinical medicine, with institution and year.
  5. Short courses: life support, HIV and TB management, emergency care, ultrasound or other skills, with dates.
  6. Leadership and programmes: facility in-charge roles, quality improvement, outreach and data reporting.
  7. Referees: three, such as a medical superintendent, facility in-charge or senior clinician.

Show What You Managed, Not Just What You Did

Many clinical officers run outpatient departments or entire dispensaries. If you have, make it clear: “In charge of a dispensary seeing about 60 patients a day, supervising two nurses and a lab technician”, or “Led the facility’s HIV clinic and kept patient files up to date for reporting”. Mention procedures you perform independently, such as minor surgery, and medico-legal work such as P3 forms, if it is part of your role. Use honest approximate figures where you do not have exact ones.

Higher Diplomas and Degrees Matter More Now

Under the collective bargaining agreement signed between the clinical officers’ union and the Council of Governors in February 2026, higher diploma holders can enter at the same grade as degree holders, and a Clinical Specialist category was created for master’s holders. That makes your qualification line more important than ever. List the exact award, the institution and the year, and if you are studying for an upgrade, include the expected completion date. Interns and New Graduates

List your internship as your main experience: the hospital, the rotations (medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology) and what you handled in each. Add community outreach and any research assistant work. Keep it to one page and choose your internship supervisor as a referee.

NGO and Research Roles

Programmes run by NGOs and research institutions often want data skills as well as clinical skills. Mention electronic medical record systems you have used, reporting to the national health information system, and any experience with study protocols or consent procedures. These are easy to forget and often decide who is shortlisted.

Apply With a Targeted Letter

A short letter naming the post and facility makes a difference with county boards, which receive hundreds of applications. See how to write a cover letter in Kenya, and for public service posts, how to apply for government jobs in Kenya.
