Design as a career

A Diploma in Graphic Design teaches visual communication: typography, layout, colour, branding, illustration, photography, print production and digital design using tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, and increasingly Figma for web and app interfaces. It is offered by art and design colleges, polytechnics and private institutes. Kenya's growing advertising, media, e-commerce and startup sectors all need designers, and freelance work is common.

• Graphic designer in advertising agencies, print shops and in-house marketing teams
• Multimedia designer and motion graphics artist for digital campaigns
• Social media designer and content designer for brands and NGOs
• UI designer for websites and apps, with additional skills in user experience
• Freelance designer serving small businesses, churches, events and schools

Entry requirements

Diploma programmes typically accept a KCSE mean grade of C- (minus); some colleges ask for a portfolio or an interest test. Public TVET places can be applied for through KUCCPS, and institutions should be registered with the TVET Authority.

Your portfolio is your licence

There is no licensing body for designers, so employers and clients decide almost entirely on your portfolio. Build it from the start: real projects for small businesses, redesigns of existing brands, social media campaigns and print materials. Show the brief, your process and the result. Platforms such as Behance and Dribbble help, but a simple personal site or PDF portfolio is enough. Respect copyright and use licensed fonts and images, since clients increasingly check.

Skills that pay

Designers who also understand marketing, can write a little copy, edit video, animate and design for the web command better rates. Learning UX principles and Figma opens product design roles in tech companies, which typically pay more than print and agency work. Career path

Junior designers progress to mid-level and senior designer, art director and creative director in agencies, or to brand and design lead in companies. Many designers combine employment with freelance clients, and some build their own studios after several years of experience and a solid client network.
