News, communications and content

A Bachelor of Journalism and Mass Communication trains you in news writing, reporting, editing, broadcast production, media law and ethics, public relations, advertising and digital media. Kenya has a large and competitive media industry, including national broadcasters, newspapers, digital outlets and a vibrant creator economy, but many graduates now work in communications rather than newsrooms, because every organisation needs people who can tell its story.

Where graduates work

  • Reporter, sub-editor, producer and presenter in TV, radio, print and digital media
  • Communications officer in NGOs, government, universities and companies
  • Public relations executive in PR agencies and corporate communications teams
  • Content creator, social media manager and digital marketing roles
  • Video producer and editor, a growing area as organisations move to video

Accreditation

The Media Council of Kenya (MCK), established under the Media Council Act, 2013, accredits journalists and sets the code of conduct for media practice. Press accreditation is needed to cover many official events and is expected for working journalists; communications staff in organisations do not always need it, but understanding the code and media law is still important.

Entry requirements

Places are allocated through KUCCPS with a minimum C+ mean grade, and universities often expect a good grade in English. Diploma holders in journalism can join with credit transfer.

How to get hired

Editors and communications managers hire on portfolio. Publish regularly, whether on a blog, a campus outlet, community radio or your own social channels, and keep your best clips, scripts and videos in an online portfolio. Practical skills such as shooting and editing video on a phone, writing for search engines, and basic design in tools like Canva are now expected. A strong LinkedIn profile helps for corporate roles.

Career path

Journalists progress from reporter to senior reporter, editor and managing editor; communicators move from officer to communications manager and head of communications. Many build freelance income alongside employment, and those who combine writing with data, video or digital marketing skills tend to progress fastest.
