Prolific is a well-established research platform where people get paid to take part in academic and commercial studies, and more recently in AI-related research. For Kenya the answer is mixed. Kenya isn’t one of Prolific’s supported sign-up countries, but Prolific runs a waitlist and sometimes invites people from unsupported countries. That’s why this file is marked Unclear rather than Dead.
What Prolific is
Researchers at universities and companies use Prolific to find participants for online studies. As a participant you complete surveys, experiments, decision tasks, interviews and, increasingly, studies that help evaluate or train AI systems. Studies are posted by researchers, not by Prolific, and you choose which ones to take. Most are short, though some run longer or over several sessions.
Prolific has a reputation for fairer pay than older survey sites because it sets a minimum hourly rate that researchers must meet. More on that below.
Can Kenya residents join Prolific?
Not through normal sign-up. Prolific’s participant help article, Who can participate in studies on Prolific?, lists the supported countries. It’s mostly OECD countries plus a few others, including South Africa, Egypt, India and Indonesia. Kenya isn’t on that list (checked October 2026). Prolific is clear that eligibility follows where you currently live, not your nationality.
Two things keep the door slightly open, which is why the status is Unclear:
- The waitlist. The same article says that if your country isn’t supported, you can join a waitlist. Prolific can’t guarantee access but may contact you if opportunities open up that match your profile.
- Invitations. Prolific says it sometimes invites participants from unsupported countries. Invited participants must verify with a valid photo ID, ideally a passport, because some other ID types aren’t accepted by its verification partner.
Prolific’s researcher help pages also mention that it has “small participant populations” in some countries outside the main list, and Kenya is named among them (source). That fits the invitation route. It doesn’t mean anyone in Kenya can sign up today.
Sign-up requirements and tests
- You must be over 18 and have a verified account.
- Identity verification with a photo ID. For people invited from unsupported countries, Prolific asks for a passport where possible. If you don’t have a passport, an invitation may be harder to complete.
- An “About you” profile. Researchers filter studies by the answers you give, so honest, complete answers decide which studies you see.
- Attention checks inside studies. Researchers can reject submissions that fail them, and repeated rejections hurt your account.
There’s no single entrance exam like on AI-training platforms. Your profile, your approval rate and the studies available decide how much you can earn.
How pay reaches M-Pesa
Prolific pays through PayPal. Its help article How do I cash out on Prolific? says you can cash out once your approved balance reaches £6 or $6, and that the payment is processed by Hyperwallet, a PayPal service, without needing a separate Hyperwallet account.
From PayPal, Kenyans can withdraw to M-Pesa through the PayPal service in the M-Pesa app, paying currency conversion and transfer charges. Prolific also notes that your country must be supported by Prolific, PayPal and Hyperwallet for you to keep using your account, so the route only works if you were properly invited and verified.
What does it pay?
Prolific says on its participant page that the minimum pay rate is £6 or $8 an hour, and that researchers are encouraged to pay £9 or $12 an hour. Each study shows its reward and estimated time before you start. Real earnings depend on how many studies match your profile, which is usually far fewer for people in small participant populations.
Red flags found
We found no red flags in Prolific’s own terms. The red flags come from people around it:
- Selling or renting Prolific accounts registered in a supported country. Prolific verifies identity and location, and using someone else’s account breaks its rules.
- “Guaranteed invite” offers that charge a fee to get you off the waitlist. Invitations come from Prolific, free, based on research demand. Nobody can sell you one.
- Fake study links sent on WhatsApp or by text. Real studies open from your Prolific dashboard.
Ban risks
Prolific checks that you are who you say you are and live where you say you live. Signing up with a fake address, using a VPN to appear to be in a supported country, running more than one account or answering screening questions dishonestly to qualify for studies can all get an account suspended, with your balance at risk. Rushing studies and failing attention checks also leads to rejections that hurt your standing.
Our verdict
Join the waitlist if you’re in Kenya. It’s free, and invitations do happen. Don’t count on Prolific as income, and never pay anyone who promises to speed it up. If you’re invited, verify with your own passport, fill in your profile honestly and take studies carefully, because a high approval rate is what keeps studies coming.
