Outlier AI

Outlier is probably the most searched AI-training platform in Kenya, and it’s where the gap between what blogs say and what the platform says is widest. The short answer, from Outlier’s own policy: if you live in Kenya, you can’t currently work on Outlier.

What Outlier is

Outlier is a platform where contributors help train and evaluate AI models. Typical work includes writing and rating AI responses, checking facts, ranking answers, and specialist tasks for people with subject knowledge in areas such as coding, maths, science or languages. Outlier is run by Scale AI, the same company behind Remotasks.

That connection matters to Kenyan readers. On 8 March 2024, Scale AI cut off Remotasks workers in Kenya with almost no warning, as reported by Rest of World and Business Daily. Outlier’s current country list is consistent with that decision.

Can Kenya residents work on Outlier?

No, not right now. Outlier publishes a list of the countries contributors may work from in its Flexible Working Guidelines. The version effective 15 July 2026, which we checked in October 2026, doesn’t include Kenya.

Several African countries are on it, including Tanzania, Malawi, Madagascar, South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, Algeria and Cameroon. Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria and Ghana aren’t.

Two details in that policy explain why there’s no back door:

  • Eligibility follows where you live, not your passport. During onboarding Outlier may ask for a government-issued ID and other information to confirm your location, which becomes your “Primary Location”. A Kenyan citizen who genuinely lives in the UK could be eligible. Someone living in Nairobi isn’t.
  • VPNs aren’t allowed. The guidelines say using a VPN to hide your presence in a restricted country isn’t permitted.

That’s why this file is marked Dead for Kenya. The platform itself is active and paying contributors elsewhere. The grey badge means it’s closed to Kenya residents, not that Outlier has shut down.

Why some blogs say Outlier is open to Kenya

You’ll find Kenyan sites saying “yes, Outlier accepts Kenyans”. The usual reasoning is that Outlier lets you create an account, or that Kenya isn’t on a US export-sanctions list. Neither proves you can work. Creating an account isn’t the same as passing location verification, and Outlier’s own published country list is the controlling document. If you read a claim that contradicts it, check the date of the claim and the date of the policy.

Sign-up requirements and tests (for eligible countries)

For completeness, here’s what Outlier asks of people in countries where it operates, according to its guidelines and FAQ:

  • Identity and location checks using a government-issued ID.
  • Skill screenings or assessments for each project type before you get paid tasks.
  • Some client projects add their own location rules on top of Outlier’s list, so even eligible contributors don’t see every project.

How pay would reach M-Pesa

Outlier’s FAQ says contributors are paid weekly, through PayPal, Airtm or ACH bank transfer depending on location. In countries where PayPal works with M-Pesa, money can move from PayPal to M-Pesa through the PayPal withdrawal service on the M-Pesa app. For a Kenya resident this is academic, because you can’t legitimately earn on Outlier from Kenya in the first place.

Be very careful with anyone offering to “receive your Outlier pay” for you, or to pay you through their own PayPal or Airtm account. That arrangement only exists when someone is running a borrowed or bought account, and the person in Kenya is the one who loses out when the account is caught.

What does it pay?

Unverified for Kenya. Outlier’s FAQ says rates are shown before you join a project and vary by project and skill. Because Kenya residents can’t work on the platform, there’s no Kenya pay rate to report, and we won’t repeat figures that circulate on social media without a source.

Red flags found

The red flags here belong to people trading on Outlier’s name in Kenya, not to Outlier itself:

  • Account selling and renting. “Verified Outlier accounts” sold or rented in Facebook, Telegram and WhatsApp groups. These rely on someone else’s identity in an eligible country. Outlier’s identity and location checks make these accounts likely to be banned, and the buyer has no protection when that happens.
  • “Outlier training” with a fee. Paid courses that promise to get you onto Outlier from Kenya. No course changes the country list.
  • VPN guides. Videos that show how to “bypass” the location check. Outlier says this isn’t permitted.

Ban risks

Very high for anyone in Kenya using a workaround. Outlier ties each account to a verified Primary Location and government ID, so a borrowed account, fake foreign ID or VPN puts the whole account, including any unpaid earnings, at risk. We strongly advise against it, and this section will never explain how to do it.

What to do instead

  • Look at platforms that confirm Kenya in writing, such as OpenTrain AI, which lists Kenya for payouts, and micro1, which doesn’t list Kenya among the countries it can’t hire from.
  • Use the Kenya eligibility tracker to check before you spend time on any assessment.
  • Check this page again. If Outlier adds Kenya to its list, we’ll change the status the same day.

Frequently asked questions

Is Outlier AI available in Kenya?

No. Kenya isn’t on the list of countries in Outlier’s Flexible Working Guidelines (effective 15 July 2026, checked by us in October 2026).

Can I use a VPN to work on Outlier from Kenya?

No. Outlier’s guidelines say using a VPN to hide your presence in a restricted country isn’t permitted, and accounts are tied to a verified location.

Can a Kenyan living abroad work on Outlier?

Possibly. Outlier’s eligibility depends on where you live, not your nationality, so a Kenyan citizen living in a listed country may qualify after ID and location checks.
