micro1

micro1 is an AI-training company that hires domain experts, and it’s one of the few big names whose published rules leave Kenya open. It isn’t for everyone. Its roles lean towards professionals with real subject expertise, and getting in starts with an interview run by an AI recruiter.

What micro1 is

micro1 describes itself as connecting domain experts with projects that build and improve AI systems for frontier AI labs. On its experts page it lists opportunities in engineering, finance, healthcare and medicine, law, economics, linguistics and cinematography, with roles from early-career professionals up to PhDs and industry leaders.

The work is usually called “AI trainer” work. Depending on the project, it can mean writing expert answers for a model to learn from, judging which of two AI answers is better and explaining why, spotting errors in AI output in your field, or building test questions. A nurse might review medical answers, an accountant might check tax reasoning, and a developer might grade code.

Can Kenya residents work for micro1?

Yes, based on micro1’s own published rules. The FAQ on its experts page says micro1 hires globally but can’t hire people who live in a specific list of countries and regions for legal, regulatory and security reasons. When we checked in October 2026, that list included Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Libya and others, but not Kenya.

That’s why this file is marked Verified. Being eligible isn’t the same as being hired, though. You still have to apply for a specific opportunity and pass the screening, and micro1 says certification doesn’t guarantee you a project.

How you apply

micro1 sets out four steps on its experts page:

  1. Apply for an opportunity. Browse the open roles on its jobs portal and apply to ones that match your field. Each listing names the skills it wants.
  2. Take the AI interview. micro1’s recruiter is an AI system that interviews you about your experience and skills. Treat it like a real interview: be specific, give examples from your work, and answer in your own words.
  3. Get onboarded. If you’re accepted, you sign a contract and set up payment.
  4. Start earning on a project that matches your verified skills.

micro1 also lets you validate specific skills on the platform to get “certified”. Certified experts can be invited to projects as they open, and more certified skills widen the range of projects you can be considered for.

Sign-up requirements

  • Real, checkable expertise in the field you apply for. Read each listing’s required skills honestly, because the interview tests them.
  • A contract and payroll setup through Deel. micro1’s Deel guide says you must upload all the documents Deel asks for, and choose the correct country of jurisdiction, or your payment may be delayed. Expect ID and tax documents, so for most Kenyan contractors that means your national ID or passport and KRA PIN.
  • Some projects track time with Hubstaff. micro1 says Hubstaff hours are exported at the end of each pay cycle to work out pay, unless the project pays per task.

How pay reaches M-Pesa

micro1 pays contractors through Deel. Its Deel guide says pay periods run from the 1st to the 15th and from the 16th to the end of the month, with payments processed within five days of each period ending. You can also list your own registered business as the entity that receives payment, if you have one.

Whether you can withdraw from Deel straight to M-Pesa, or need to go through a Kenyan bank account first, is unverified. Deel shows the withdrawal methods available for your country inside your account, and we haven’t yet tested a micro1 payout to Kenya. The safe assumption is that you’ll withdraw to a Kenyan bank account in your own name and then send to M-Pesa through your bank’s app, paying your bank’s charges along the way.

What does it pay?

Pay depends on the role and is shown on each listing. As one example, a micro1 listing for a Digital Addiction Psychologist AI trainer advertised $100 to $200 an hour. That’s a specialist clinical role. Generalist or early-career roles are likely to pay less, and we haven’t seen an official overall pay range, so treat any single figure as one listing, not a typical rate.

Red flags found

We found no red flags in micro1’s published terms. The red flags we found come from people impersonating it:

  • Recruiters on WhatsApp, Telegram or Gmail offering micro1 roles. Apply only through micro1’s own jobs portal, and check that any email really comes from micro1’s own domain.
  • Fees to “guarantee” an interview or to buy interview answers. micro1 doesn’t charge applicants, and the interview exists to test your own expertise.
  • Requests for your ID from anyone outside micro1’s own sign-up flow and Deel.

Ban risks

micro1 contracts are tied to the identity and country you give Deel. Misstating your location or expertise, letting someone else do your interview or work, or pasting AI-generated answers where the project needs your own judgement are the obvious ways to lose a contract. Keep your country set to Kenya, keep your documents current and do the work yourself.

Our verdict

For Kenyan professionals with deep expertise, especially in health, law, finance, engineering, software or languages, micro1 is one of the most promising AI-training options, because its published exclusion list doesn’t include Kenya. It’s a weaker fit for beginners looking for quick, simple tasks. Apply only to roles you’re genuinely qualified for, prepare for the AI interview as you would for any job interview, and keep everything inside micro1’s portal and Deel.
