What the course covers

A Diploma in Supply Chain Management (sometimes called Purchasing and Supplies Management) covers purchasing, stores management, inventory control, logistics, transport, warehousing and the basics of public procurement law. It is widely offered by national polytechnics and technical institutes, and it suits people who like organised, practical work with goods, documents and suppliers.

Where diploma holders work

  • Stores clerk, storekeeper and inventory assistant in hospitals, schools, factories and supermarkets
  • Warehouse assistant, dispatch clerk and stock controller with distributors and logistics firms
  • Procurement assistant in counties, state corporations and NGOs
  • Logistics assistant in freight forwarding, clearing and transport companies

Entry requirements

Government-sponsored TVET places come through KUCCPS, usually with a KCSE mean grade of C- (minus). Certificate holders in a related field can progress to the diploma.

Licensing and professional exams

Procurement and supplies practice is regulated in Kenya under the Supplies Practitioners Management Act, 2007, and the Kenya Institute of Supplies Management (KISM) registers practitioners. Many diploma holders later sit the KASNEB Certified Procurement and Supply Professional of Kenya (CPSP-K) qualification, which is increasingly listed as a requirement for procurement officer roles. Public sector employers will also expect familiarity with the Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Act, 2015.

Skills that set you apart

Stock accuracy is what supervisors notice first, so experience with stock counts, bin cards, goods received notes and an inventory system (from Excel to an ERP) is valuable. In logistics roles a valid driving licence, knowledge of customs documentation and familiarity with the port and inland container depots can open doors. Forklift certification is a practical extra for warehouse roles.

Progression

A common path runs from clerk or assistant to stores supervisor, procurement officer or logistics coordinator within a few years. A degree in procurement and supply chain, often studied part-time, plus CPSP-K leads on to senior officer and manager posts.

Honesty is checked closely in stores roles, and employers often request references and a certificate of good conduct before confirming an offer.
