A course that maps directly to jobs

Sales roles are among the most frequently advertised jobs in Kenya, and a Diploma in Sales and Marketing prepares you for exactly that market. The course typically covers selling skills, consumer behaviour, marketing research, advertising, customer service, distribution and, in newer programmes, digital marketing. It is offered by polytechnics, technical institutes and private colleges, and also by professional bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Marketing through local tuition providers.

Entry requirements

For public TVET colleges, places are applied for through KUCCPS, with a usual minimum KCSE mean grade of C- (minus). Private colleges set their own entry rules, so check accreditation with the TVET Authority before enrolling.

How sales hiring works

Sales jobs often combine a basic salary with commission, and some are commission only. Read the offer carefully, ask how targets are set, and work out what you would earn at a realistic sales level, not the best case. Employers favour candidates with a track record, so keep evidence from attachments: units sold, accounts opened, leads converted. A driving licence and a smartphone are frequently required for field roles.

Building a marketing profile

For marketing roles, a portfolio counts: social media accounts you have grown, simple campaigns you have run, or content you have written. The Marketing Society of Kenya runs events and training that help with networking. A strong LinkedIn profile is particularly useful in this field.

Progression

Good performers move to senior sales executive, team leader and area sales manager within a few years, often without further study, though a degree helps for marketing manager posts.
