The new standard for primary teachers
The Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE) replaced the old P1 certificate as the initial qualification for primary school teachers in Kenya, as part of the reforms that came with the competency-based curriculum. It is offered by public and private teacher training colleges over three years and prepares teachers to handle the CBC learning areas at primary level, including assessment through projects and practical activities.
Registration with TSC
As with all teachers, DPTE graduates must register with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) before they can teach in public or private schools. TSC also handles recruitment for public primary schools when posts are funded, usually through advertised recruitment rounds with scoring based on qualifications and the year you graduated.
Where DPTE holders work
- Public primary schools through TSC recruitment and internship programmes
- Private primary schools and academies, which recruit directly
- Community, faith-based and NGO-supported schools
- Tutoring, after-school programmes and learning support roles
Entry requirements
Admission to DPTE generally requires a KCSE mean grade of C (plain), with minimum grades in English, Kiswahili and Mathematics set by the Ministry of Education. Confirm the current requirements with the college and the ministry before applying, as they have been revised during the CBC rollout.
What schools look for
Primary schools value teachers who are confident with CBC assessment, can manage large classes, communicate well with parents and use simple digital tools for lesson planning and records. Skills in music, art, sport or special needs support make your application stand out. Teaching practice reports and a short portfolio of lesson plans are useful evidence at interview.
Career growth
Many DPTE teachers later pursue a degree in education, often through school-holiday or part-time programmes, which opens senior roles and junior school posts. Within TSC, promotion leads to senior teacher, deputy head and head teacher roles. Curriculum resources and guidance are published by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD).
