Teaching mathematics and the sciences

The Bachelor of Education (Science) trains teachers in two science-based subjects, typically drawn from Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Agriculture, Computer Studies and Geography. Science and mathematics teachers have historically been in shorter supply than humanities teachers in Kenya, and the shift to the competency-based curriculum, with its emphasis on STEM pathways in senior school, keeps demand for well-qualified science teachers high.

TSC registration

All teachers must register with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to teach in any school. The commission checks that your degree includes two recognised teaching subjects with the required grades and that you meet its integrity requirements. Your TSC number is required for public recruitment and asked for by most private schools.

Jobs for science teachers

  • Public secondary and junior schools through TSC recruitment and internships
  • Board of management posts and private schools, which hire throughout the year
  • International schools offering IGCSE or IB curricula, which pay more and look for strong subject knowledge
  • STEM education programmes, tutoring companies, laboratory and edtech roles

Entry requirements

Places are allocated through KUCCPS. TSC rules require at least a C+ mean grade and C+ in each teaching subject; Mathematics-based combinations sometimes set higher university requirements. Choose your combination with the market in mind, for example Mathematics and Physics or Mathematics and Chemistry are consistently in demand.

Beyond the classroom

A science education degree gives you strong subject knowledge plus presentation skills, which transfer well. Some graduates move into laboratory management, science communication, pharmaceutical or agricultural sales, data and statistics roles, or curriculum work. Learning to teach with digital tools and practical, project-based methods also makes you more attractive to private and international schools.

Career progression

Within TSC, teachers move through career grades by promotion, and heads of science or mathematics departments are often promoted to deputy principal. Postgraduate study in your subject or in education opens lecturing posts in teacher training colleges and universities. Keep your certificates, TSC number and good conduct certificate current, as public adverts close quickly.
