A practical entry into business work

A Diploma in Business Management is offered by national polytechnics, technical training institutes and private colleges across Kenya, usually over two to three years. It covers principles of management, accounting, marketing, entrepreneurship, business law, office practice and ICT. Under the competency-based curriculum now rolled out in TVET institutions, many colleges assess the course through TVET CDACC, while older programmes were examined by KNEC; employers generally accept both.

Jobs diploma holders get

  • Sales representative, field sales and merchandiser roles with FMCG and distribution companies
  • Customer service and front desk positions in banks, telcos, insurers and hospitals
  • Office administrator, data clerk or administrative assistant in SMEs and NGOs
  • Shop supervisor and branch assistant roles in retail chains and microfinance

Entry requirements

Public TVET places are applied for through KUCCPS, and the usual minimum is a KCSE mean grade of C- (minus). Holders of a relevant artisan or certificate qualification can usually progress to the diploma even with a lower KCSE grade. Make sure the college is registered with the TVET Authority before paying fees.

Making the diploma competitive

Because many people hold general business diplomas, employers pick candidates who can show results: sales targets met during attachment, customer complaints resolved, or a small business they have run. Computer skills matter more than most applicants think, especially Excel and email etiquette. Adding a short professional course, such as the KASNEB Accounting Technicians Diploma or a digital marketing certificate, gives you a specialism.

Next steps

Many diploma holders work for a few years and then join a university for a BCom or business degree, often with credit transfer that shortens the course. Others move into supervisory roles within the same company. Whatever you choose, read every job advert closely: genuine employers never ask for money to process an application, and our guide to spotting fake job adverts lists the warning signs that target diploma and certificate holders in particular.
