Why CHRP matters for HR careers
The Certified Human Resource Professional (CHRP) qualification is examined by the Human Resource Management Professionals Examination Board (HRMPEB), established under the Human Resource Management Professionals Act, 2012. The same Act set up the Institute of Human Resource Management (IHRM), which registers HR practitioners and issues practising certificates. In practice CHRP has become the qualification that turns an HR graduate or diploma holder into someone employers trust with senior HR responsibility.
Roles where it is requested
- HR officer and senior HR officer in private companies and NGOs
- HR manager and HR business partner roles, where CHRP is often listed as a minimum
- Public sector HR posts advertised by the Public Service Commission and county boards
- Recruitment, payroll and employee relations specialists in outsourcing and consulting firms
Who can sit it
HRMPEB sets the entry criteria, which accept KCSE holders with the required grades as well as those with HR certificates, diplomas or degrees, with exemptions for some qualifications. Check the board's current requirements before registering, as they are updated from time to time.
What the work involves
Most HR work in Kenya comes back to the Employment Act and related laws. HR staff draft contracts, manage probation and leave, handle disciplinary processes and calculate final dues when people leave. If you are building your knowledge, start with our guides on probation periods, maternity and paternity leave and terminal dues, then practise with the terminal dues calculator and overtime calculator.
Career progression
CHRP holders typically move from officer to senior officer within a few years, then into HR manager or specialist roles. Combining CHRP with a degree in HR or business, and keeping your IHRM practising certificate current through continuing development, is what most senior job adverts ask for.
Tips for candidates
Employers reading an HR CV look for the exact status of your CHRP papers and your IHRM membership number, so state both clearly. Pair the qualification with hands-on payroll or recruitment experience, even from an attachment, because a certificate without practice rarely wins an HR officer role. Keep notes of the policies you have drafted or reviewed; they make strong interview examples.
