Behind every clean room

A Certificate in Housekeeping and Laundry Operations (sometimes called Accommodation Operations) trains people to clean and prepare guest rooms and public areas, operate laundry equipment, handle linen and guest items, and follow hygiene and safety standards. It is offered by Kenya Utalii College, technical institutes and private hospitality schools, often over about a year. Housekeeping is the largest department in many hotels, and the skills transfer to hospitals, schools, offices and residential estates.

Entry requirements

Certificate programmes generally accept a KCSE mean grade of D (plain), and some short courses accept applicants without KCSE or with relevant experience. Choose a course with a hotel attachment, because employers hire heavily from attachment students.

What employers value

Hotels look for attention to detail, honesty, speed and a positive attitude with guests. Knowing how to handle cleaning chemicals safely, care for different fabrics, and report maintenance issues properly is part of the job. Housekeeping staff enter guest rooms, so integrity is checked carefully, and you may be asked for a certificate of good conduct.

Working conditions

Moving up

Room attendants who show reliability are promoted to floor supervisor, then to assistant executive housekeeper and executive housekeeper, which is a senior management role in large hotels. A diploma in hospitality or accommodation operations speeds up progression.
