Restoring movement and function

Physiotherapists help people recover from injury, surgery, stroke and long-term conditions through exercise, manual therapy and rehabilitation. The BSc in Physiotherapy is a four-year degree offered at a few Kenyan universities, while KMTC and others offer a diploma. Demand is growing as road injuries, strokes and sports participation rise, and as private hospitals and sports clubs expand rehabilitation services.

Regulation

The Physiotherapists Act, 2014 established the Physiotherapy Council of Kenya, which registers and licenses physiotherapists and approves training. Graduates complete the internship and licensing steps the council requires and must hold a valid practising licence to work or open a clinic.

Where physiotherapists work

  • Rehabilitation departments in county, referral and private hospitals
  • Private physiotherapy clinics and home-based rehabilitation services
  • Sports clubs, gyms and national teams
  • Disability and rehabilitation programmes run by NGOs, schools and special units
  • Locum roles covering shifts in hospitals and clinics

Entry requirements

Places are allocated through KUCCPS, usually requiring a C+ mean grade with good grades in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics or Physics. Diploma holders can often upgrade to the degree.

Building a career

New physiotherapists benefit from rotating through different areas, such as orthopaedics, neurology, paediatrics and cardiorespiratory care, before choosing a focus. Continuing education in sports physiotherapy, manual therapy or neurological rehabilitation adds value, and private clients choose practitioners by reputation, so communication skills and professionalism matter a great deal.

Private practice

Many experienced physiotherapists open their own clinics. This requires council licensing for the premises as well as the practitioner, county business permits, equipment and relationships with doctors and insurers who refer patients. Understanding insurance billing and keeping careful treatment records helps a clinic get paid on time.

Progression

Hospital physiotherapists progress to senior and chief physiotherapist roles. A master's degree opens teaching, research and specialist clinical posts, and some physiotherapists move into health management or sports science.

Expect interview questions on clinical reasoning: how you would assess and plan treatment for a stroke patient, a sports knee injury or chronic back pain.
