Clinical officers at degree level
Clinical officers are a uniquely important cadre in Kenya's health system. They diagnose and treat patients, prescribe, perform minor procedures and run many health centres and outpatient departments. The BSc in Clinical Medicine (often titled Clinical Medicine and Community Health) is a four-year university degree that trains clinical officers to a higher academic level than the diploma, with more depth in medicine, research and health management.
Regulation
Clinical officers are regulated by the Clinical Officers Council (COC) under the Clinical Officers (Training, Registration and Licensing) Act, 2017. Graduates complete an internship, sit the council's licensing examination and must hold a valid practising licence. COC also approves training institutions, so confirm that your chosen programme is accredited before you enrol.
Where graduates work
- Clinical officer posts in county hospitals, health centres and dispensaries
- Outpatient, casualty and specialist clinics in private and faith-based hospitals
- HIV, TB, malaria and maternal health programmes run by NGOs and research institutions
- Health facility management, insurance claims review and medical sales
Entry requirements
Government-sponsored places are allocated through KUCCPS, usually requiring a KCSE mean grade of C+ with C+ grades in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics, and English or Kiswahili. Diploma clinical officers can often join through upgrading programmes with credit for prior learning.
Specialisation and growth
Clinical officers can specialise through higher diplomas in areas such as anaesthesia, ENT, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, paediatrics, reproductive health, dermatology and mental health. Specialist clinical officers are scarce in many counties, which makes these qualifications valuable. The degree also opens routes to a master's in public health, epidemiology or health systems management.
Job hunting tips
Recruitment by counties happens in batches, so watch county public service board adverts as well as private hospital vacancies. Have your COC registration, practising licence, internship certificate, academic certificates and professional indemnity ready. Locum work is a common bridge between postings, but confirm payment terms in writing.
