Laboratory science at degree level

A BSc in Medical Laboratory Science trains technologists to perform and supervise diagnostic tests in haematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, parasitology, immunology, blood transfusion and histopathology. Laboratory results drive most clinical decisions, so the work is precise and highly regulated. The degree typically takes four years and includes extensive practical placement.

Regulation

Medical laboratory professionals are regulated by the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB) under the Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Act. Graduates complete the internship and licensing examination the board requires, register, and renew their practising licence. Laboratories themselves are also licensed, and quality accreditation (for example to ISO 15189) is increasingly expected for larger labs.

Where graduates work

  • Hospital and county laboratories, including blood transfusion services
  • Private diagnostic chains and standalone laboratories
  • Research institutions, universities and clinical trial sites
  • Public health laboratories and programmes working on HIV, TB and disease surveillance
  • Sales and technical support roles with laboratory equipment and reagent suppliers

Entry requirements

University places are allocated through KUCCPS, usually requiring a C+ mean grade with good grades in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics or Physics. Diploma holders can join through upgrading programmes.

Skills that help

Employers value experience with automated analysers, laboratory information systems and quality control procedures. Research labs look for molecular techniques such as PCR, biosafety training and good documentation habits. Research assistant posts with institutes such as KEMRI are frequently advertised and are a good first step for graduates interested in science careers.

Career path

Technologists progress to senior and chief laboratory technologist, laboratory manager or quality manager. A master's degree opens routes into specialised diagnostics, research management, laboratory teaching and public health. Some move into the private sector as application specialists, where knowledge of the equipment and the clinical setting is valuable.

Working conditions

Hospital laboratories run around the clock, so expect night and weekend shifts early in your career. Biosafety is part of daily work: correct use of protective equipment, sample handling and waste disposal are checked by supervisors and inspectors, and good habits here are noticed at promotion time.
