The professional procurement exam

The Certified Procurement and Supply Professional of Kenya (CPSP-K) qualification is examined by KASNEB and covers procurement planning, contract management, logistics, warehousing, ethics and public procurement law. It is now the qualification most Kenyan employers list for procurement officers, alongside membership of the Kenya Institute of Supplies Management (KISM), which registers and licenses supplies practitioners under the Supplies Practitioners Management Act, 2007.

Roles it leads to

  • Procurement officer and supply chain officer in public and private organisations
  • Buyer, category officer and sourcing specialist in retail, manufacturing and FMCG
  • Stores, inventory and warehouse management roles
  • Contract management and logistics coordination in NGOs and construction

Who can register

Like other KASNEB qualifications, CPSP-K is open to KCSE holders who meet the minimum grades, and to holders of diplomas and degrees, some of whom receive exemptions. Many people sit it after a diploma or degree in supply chain management to meet the professional requirement in job adverts.

Public procurement knowledge

A large share of procurement jobs are in government, counties and state corporations, where everything runs under the Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Act, 2015. Expect interview questions on procurement methods, evaluation committees, the e-procurement system and record keeping. Our guide to applying for government jobs explains how those recruitment processes work and what documents you need.

Progression

With CPSP-K and a few years' experience, officers move to senior procurement officer and then to procurement or supply chain manager. Employers look for evidence of savings achieved, contracts managed and clean audit results, so keep a record of the tenders and contracts you have handled and use specific numbers on your CV.

Skills employers test

Beyond the exams, interview panels often ask candidates to walk through a full tender cycle, from the procurement plan and specifications to evaluation, award, contract and payment. Being comfortable with Excel price comparisons, an ERP or e-procurement platform, and basic import documentation such as customs entries and incoterms gives you an advantage over candidates who only know the theory.
