Police Constable Recruitment: Stages, Requirements and Practice Questions

Police constable recruitment in Kenya is a one-day, in-person exercise at designated centres, followed by further vetting for those selected. Knowing the published requirements and stages helps you avoid being turned away on the day.

Where this comes from. Requirements and documents below are from the National Police Service Commission’s September 2025 constable recruitment advert. The exercise was later conducted by the National Police Service on 17 November 2025 after a court ruling. A new round may change the details, so always check the latest official advert.

Published Requirements (2025 Round)

Kenyan citizen with a national ID; aged 18 to 28; KCSE D+ with at least D+ in English or Kiswahili; physically and medically fit; minimum height 5ft 8in for men and 5ft 3in for women; no criminal record or pending charges. Female candidates must not be pregnant at recruitment or during training. NYS graduates who meet the requirements were encouraged to apply.

Candidates had to bring originals and copies of academic certificates and testimonials, national ID, birth certificate, and NYS discharge certificate where applicable. The advert warned that recruitment is free and that bribery is a criminal offence.

On the Day

Arrive by 8:00 am at the centre for your constituency, as the 2025 advert required, with all documents. Original documents are returned before you leave the centre. Panels check height, documents and fitness before interviews, so candidates who miss a basic requirement are usually sent home early. Eat beforehand and carry water, as the exercise runs from morning to evening.

Practice Questions

Why do you want to join the National Police Service?
Motivation

Give a short, sincere reason tied to service to the community. Avoid talking about the job as just a source of income.

Someone offers to help you get selected for a fee. What do you do?
Integrity

Refuse and report it. The 2025 advert gave reporting lines including 0709 099 000 and DCI’s 0800 722 203.

You see a fellow officer taking a bribe. How do you respond?
Judgement

Show that you know misconduct must be reported through the chain of command or to the Internal Affairs Unit, and that you would not take part.

How would you build trust with residents in an area that distrusts the police?
Community

Mention respectful conduct, community policing forums and protecting human rights.

How do you handle orders you disagree with?
Discipline

Show respect for lawful orders and procedure, and that unlawful orders should be raised through proper channels.

What documents did you bring today?
Documents

Panels check documents before anything else. Have originals and copies in a clear folder in the order the advert lists them, so you can produce each one quickly.

How have you prepared physically for training?
Fitness

Be honest and specific: running routine, strength work, and a recent medical check.

These are practice questions we built from the official criteria above. They are not leaked or official interview questions, and real panels may ask different ones. Never pay anyone who offers “the actual questions” or a guaranteed slot: report it to DCI on 0800 722 203.
