KDF Recruitment in Kenya: Current Status, Requirements and How It Works

The current status of Kenya Defence Forces recruitment, checked on the Ministry of Defence website, and how the official process works so you can spot fake adverts.

Open rounds

There is no open round in this category that we could verify on the official source today. We check daily, so the next advert will appear here.

Is KDF recruitment open now?

No. When we checked mod.go.ke on 17 October 2026, the Ministry of Defence had not published a 2026 KDF recruitment advert. The last nationwide exercise was the 2025 cycle. Its advert was published on 14 September 2025, online applications for officer cadets, specialist officers and tradesmen/women closed on 12 October 2025, and the nationwide intake of general duty recruits ended on 25 October 2025. Interviews for shortlisted candidates followed in November and December 2025.

The Ministry of Defence’s FAQ says recruitment happens according to “the requirements and timelines determined by the Ministry of Defence”. There is no fixed annual date, so anyone giving you a 2026 recruitment date before the Ministry publishes one is guessing, or trying to defraud you. When an advert appears on mod.go.ke, we will add it here with its own round page.

Who recruits for KDF

The Kenya Defence Forces are established by Article 241 of the Constitution and consist of the Kenya Army, the Kenya Air Force and the Kenya Navy. Recruitment is run by the Ministry of Defence and the Defence Forces themselves. It does not go through the Public Service Commission. The Ministry also advertises civilian jobs, such as clerks, drivers and technicians at Ulinzi House and in the services. Those adverts appear in the “jobs” section of mod.go.ke and use the PSC 2 application form.

Recruitment categories

A typical KDF recruitment advert covers several categories, each with its own academic, age and physical requirements. The 2025 advert covered:

  • General Service Officer (GSO) cadets, both regular (KCSE leavers) and graduate, trained at the Kenya Military Academy.
  • Specialist officers: professionals such as doctors, engineers and lawyers commissioned into their field.
  • General duty recruits, selected at recruitment centres in every county.
  • Tradesmen and tradeswomen, such as artisans and technicians with trade qualifications.
  • Defence Forces Constables.

Requirements such as minimum KCSE grades, age limits, height and weight, and documents change from one exercise to the next. Always go by the current advert, not last year’s.

How the process works

In the 2025 cycle, officer cadets, specialist officers and tradesmen/women had to apply online at recruit.mod.go.ke, and shortlisted candidates were announced in the print media. General duty recruits and constables did not apply online. They turned up in person at the recruitment centre for their sub-county on the published itinerary date, with original documents. Selected candidates then went for medical checks and documentation before reporting for training.

Recruitment is free: report bribery

The 2025 advert said in capital letters that KDF recruitment is free and open to all eligible candidates, and that bribery or any attempt to influence recruitment is a criminal offence. It gave two hotlines for reporting malpractice, 0726 419 706 and 0726 419 709, and also told the public to report to the nearest police station or military camp. The Ministry has issued several warnings about fake KDF recruitment adverts circulating on social media.

Warning signs of a fake KDF advert:

  • It is not on mod.go.ke or the verified KDF social media accounts.
  • It asks for an “application fee”, “medical fee” or payment to an agent.
  • It promises a guaranteed slot or “connections” inside KDF.
  • It asks you to apply through a WhatsApp number or a Google Form.
