Job Purpose Statement
The Senior Trader will formulate the Global Market trading strategy in line with the NCBA Bank Group’s Trading strategy and risk appetite. You will undertake proprietary trading in currencies, fixed income—including derivatives, as well as manage currency and interest rate positions that the bank holds. You will be managing risk, liquidity, and exposures, and you will support and manage all aspects of the trading desk.
You will be responsible for managing all the risks associated with Treasury products such as FX Spot, Forwards & Swaps, FX Options, Non-Deliverable Forwards, Rates trading, and any other structured products within the approved risk appetite and portfolio standards. The role should contribute to the organization through better pricing and risk management while also providing strategic support to the Group’s subsidiaries.
Key Accountabilities (Duties and Responsibilities)
Financial (55% Weighting)
- Meet or exceed the Global Markets FX & Fixed Income trading income target.
- Execute the trading strategy in a way that is coherent with the bank’s overall strategy, always operating within approved risk appetite and portfolio standards.
- Generate revenue via both vanilla and structured FX and Rates products (e.g. forwards, swaps, options, Bonds).
- Trade currencies to profit from anticipated market movements, while respecting approved dealer specific and overall exposure trading limits.
- Recommend local rate/pricing for transactions, considering international rates, transaction size, market stability, and funding availability.
- Drive revenue growth by cross-selling complementary bank products, as aligned with the bank’s financial goals.
Internal Business Processes (25% Weighting)
- Monitor and analyse currency and interest rate markets, economic data, and news flow to forecast market movements, anticipate risk, and optimize trade timing.
- Stay abreast of macroeconomic, monetary policy, regulatory, and market developments influencing FX & Rates markets and any other market intelligence to stay ahead of volatility and shifts in supply/demand dynamics.
- Monitor and manage daily, intra-day, and overnight risk exposures to ensure they remain within approved limits. Use stress tests, scenario analyses, and hedging techniques where applicable.
- Adhere strictly to the bank’s risk management policies, credit policy, and regulatory requirements (e.g. Central Bank guidelines, Banking Act, etc.).
- Seek to optimize revenue from Group trading activities.
- Maintain accurate deal booking and recordkeeping: inputting deals timely in dealing systems, ensuring back-office gets the required information in correct format.
Customer (10% Weighting)
- Engage with internal stakeholders to ensure all systems run effectively and knowledge sharing.
- Provide market commentary, trade ideas, and trading signals to internal stakeholders.
- Provide timely and continuous product training to internal stakeholders across the bank when required.
- Assist in the department’s regular activities in the absence of other dealers.
- Reconcile P&L, positions, and ensure any anomalies are flagged and addressed.
- Support continuous improvement and optimization of internal trading processes and systems (e.g. automation, tools, platforms).
- Grow the bank’s trading/treasury portfolio by ensuring retention and acquisition of trading counterparties.
- Work closely with the sales/relationship management teams to pitch trade ideas, provide market colour, and advise clients.
- Enhance the Bank’s market profile (FX & Rates) locally and regionally; establish the Bank as a leading name in relevant markets.
- Respond to requests quickly and proactively, whether for specific transactions or for advice; ensure smooth hand-offs within the bank where needed.
- Maintain contact with key players in the industry and gather information that is likely to affect financial markets.
- Manage quality of portfolio of Trading products by improving current products and developing new ones to ensure the Bank’s dynamic responsiveness to meet evolving client demands and market opportunities.
- Make prices in relevant products both to sales team for onward transmission to clients and to other interbank counterparties.
- Ensure all relevant parties are kept abreast of key market developments.
Learning and Growth (10% Weighting)
- Take up development programs to ensure continuous enhancement of competences of the members of the team, including self.
- Attend all scheduled trainings and complete all e-learning modules.
- Mentor, coach, and share knowledge with junior traders, relationship managers, and staff in other business units to raise overall team capability.
- Stay updated with best practices, new products, structural innovations (e.g. in derivatives, structured solutions), and technology that can enhance performance (analytics, automation).

- External: Existing and Prospective Clients, Competitors, Regulatory Authorities, Service Providers-Trading platforms, and Professional bodies – ACI.
Decision Making Authority/Mandates/Constraints:
- Operational: Interest and Foreign Exchange rate setting requirements for the Bank.
- Managerial: Disciplinary actions on direct-report staff, Structure and assignments for the Trading team, and Performance management for the Trading team.

Ideal Job Specifications
Academic:
- University degree or equivalent.
Professional:
- ACI Certification.
Desired Work Experience:
- Minimum 7 years banking experience and minimum 3 years progressive experience in a busy Treasury environment.
- A sound background and knowledge of banking with particular emphasis on Foreign exchange products and money market products.
Technical Competencies:
- Deep expertise in financial markets; strong grasp of FX, interest rate, and related derivative products.
- Proven experience trading vanilla and structured FX & Rates products.
- Ability to analyze market drivers and interpret economic indicators, macro & cross-asset trends that impact pricing and risk.
- Ability to determine appropriate product/pricing strategies.
- Strong numerical/quantitative ability; comfortable working with charts, data, pricing engines, and scenario analysis.
- Solid knowledge of operational workflows, system and platform requirements for executing, booking, settling, and reporting trades.
