Chogoria hospital was started by the Scottish missionaries back in 1922 with the help of Mr and Mrs. Irvine being in charge. Chogoria hospital is on a side-road which branches off Embu – Meru highway about 2km from the highway. Chogoria hospital was built in a serene environment around 200km north of Nairobi city. It is situated within the fast growing Chogoria township in Mwimbi division, Maara district in Tharaka – Nithi county.

Medical Officer

Job Summary:

The overall purpose ofthis job is to provide comprehensive, high-quality clinical care by assessing, diagnosing, and managing patientsacross inpatient and outpatient settings, performing minor procedures,delivering preventive and rehabilitative services, and responding effectivelyto emergencies.

KeyResponsibilities:

  • Clinical Care and Patient Management
  • Conduct comprehensive patient assessments by taking detailed histories, performing thorough physical examinations, and ordering or reviewing relevant investigations to ensure accurate diagnosis and formulation of effective, evidence-based treatment plans for both inpatients and outpatients.
  • Guide patients through their individualized treatment plans, provide in-depth counselling on adherence and lifestyle modifications, and monitor clinical progress systematically to achieve optimal recovery outcomes and enhance patient satisfaction.
  • Perform minor surgical, obstetric, and gynecological procedures safely and effectively in accordance with professional guidelines and institutional protocols, minimizing complications and improving patient care quality.
  • Quality Assurance, Documentation, and Clinical Referrals
  • Adhere strictly to ethical, legal, and institutional guidelines in all clinical decisions, ensuring that patient rights, confidentiality, and medical regulations are upheld at all times.
  • Maintain meticulous and up-to-date patient documentation, including assessments, treatment plans, and follow-ups, to support continuity of care, informed decision-making, and compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Initiate timely consultations and referrals upward, downward, or lateral when specialized input is required, ensuring a multidisciplinary approach and holistic management of complex cases.
  • Emergency Response and Preventive Care
  • Provide both basic and advanced life support interventions during emergencies, acting swiftly to stabilize patients, prevent adverse outcomes, and support critical care teams.
  • Deliver comprehensive preventive, promotive, curative, and rehabilitative healthcare services addressing physical, mental, and psychosocial needs, promoting overall patient wellbeing and reducing the risk of complications or recurrent illness.
  • Continuous Professional Development.
  • Actively participate in, and conduct, Continuous Medical Education (CME) sessions, workshops, and departmental learning activities to maintain current medical knowledge, strengthen professional competence, and support a culture of learning and knowledge sharing among colleagues.
  • Any other responsibilities assigned to the jobholder by the supervisor from time to time.

Qualifications &Competencies:

  • Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB/MBBS) from a recognized university.
  • Valid registration and practicing license with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Advanced Trauma life Support certification
  • A minimum of two (2) years post internship experience in a hospital.
  • Emergency Care training (Certificate or Diploma)
  • Experience/skills in ICU or HDU settings
  • Strong clinical knowledge, diagnostic skills, and ability to handle emergencies.
