Job Description

In this digital age, the power of the internet has transformed the job search process because the search engines, for example Google has enabled job seekers to find job opportunities.

Through Google search, Christine Omwengo learned about Corporate Staffing where she checked the website and submitted her CV to the company’s database. This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Christine-T.png

She received job alerts; among them was the Financial Accountant we had advertised for our client Chiromo Fertilizers Limited. She customized her CV, applied for that role and she was shortlisted.

Here is her job search journey and a few lessons you can pick.

Tell us about yourself.

I am Christine Omwenga, a Certified Public Accountant of Kenya with over 9 years of experience in the manufacturing industry, cleaning equipment and services business activities.

How long had you been looking for a job?

I had been actively looking for a job for 3 months.

What has your job search experience been like?

The process was a bit tedious but I stayed focused on my goal. I took one step at a time. Successful job search requires patience and determination.

Are there any specific challenges you encountered in your job search process?

Yes. Some of the challenges that I encountered included lack of communication from the employers after applications or even after the interviews, stiff competition, and even corruption where some would ask for a bribe to shortlist me for a role.

Where did you hear about Corporate Staffing and the job opportunity?

I learned about Corporate Staffing through a Google search which led me to their website and I submitted my CV to get job alerts. That is when I learned about the role of a financial accountant.

Anyone looking for a job, I would highly recommend them to check the Corporate Staffing website and social media platforms.

How was the application and interview process?

The process was smooth. One and half weeks after applying for a job, I received a call that I had been shortlisted. Four days later, I was scheduled for a virtual interview with CSS and a physical interview with the client.

Did you think you would get the job?

Yes, my experience and qualifications matched with what was on the job description and that gave me the confidence that I was right for the role.

What do you think employers look for or check when selecting suitable candidates?

First, the employers check if you match what they are looking for that is if you are qualified for the role, if you have the relevant experience and skills, and if you are adaptable to learn and bring value to the organization.

Many professionals continue to look for jobs in this competitive job market. What is your advice to them?

The advice that I would give to anyone looking for a job is to have a professional CV because it is the first thing that employers look at before they invite you for an interview. Apply for many jobs, especially the ones you meet the requirements, and be optimistic.

What do you think is the secret to getting a job in this competitive market?

It is important to understand that many other applicants are competing for the same job you are applying for and therefore identify your unique value proposition that will make you gain a competitive edge.

If you were to speak to any professional out there, what is one thing you would tell them to do to succeed this 2023?

Be smart in your job search, get ahead of yourself, learn new ideas  and skills, be an open-minded person, and have a positive mindset.
