Overview
Equator Energy seeks a Head of Asset Management who will oversee the performance and lifecycle of our solar PV and BESS portfolio, ensuring optimal energy generation, cost efficiency, and client satisfaction. In this key role you will be monitoring and improving the performance of C&I scale solar plants, while coordinating a large team of skilled engineers and technicians to effectively complete scheduled and unscheduled maintenance works across 6+ countries, over our portfolio of more than 100 plants.
You will work closely with all departments in the organisation and with clients to ensure optimal return from our operating assets. Our company adheres to the highest international standards of technical solutions delivery and ethical business practices and this role will be at the forefront of implementation efforts in line with these standards.
The Head of Asset Management reports directly to the CTO.
Responsibilities
Breakdown Response:
- Establish and maintain rapid response protocols for critical system failures across the multi-country portfolio
- Coordinate breakdown response teams and escalation procedures to minimize downtime
- Manage 24/7 monitoring systems and alert protocols for immediate breakdown identification
- Implement root cause analysis procedures and preventive measures to reduce the recurrence of faults
- Maintain strategic spare parts inventory across regional locations for swift repairs
- Ensure compliance with contractual guarantees and response-time requirements
Performance Monitoring & Analysis:
- Oversee comprehensive performance monitoring of the whole portfolio
- Lead advanced data analytics initiatives using sophisticated monitoring platforms and business intelligence tools
- Establish KPI frameworks and benchmarking standards for optimal asset performance
- Conduct detailed energy yield analysis, loss analysis, and performance ratio optimization
- Generate executive and board-level performance reports and strategic recommendations for stakeholders
- Develop and optimise predictive maintenance strategies based on performance trends and data analysis
Team Coordination & Communication:
- Lead and manage a diverse team of engineers and technicians across 6+ countries
- Develop and implement strategic workforce planning and resource allocation strategies
- Establish clear reporting structures, performance metrics, and accountability frameworks
- Coordinate cross-regional operations and standardize procedures across all locations
- Foster a collaborative culture and ensure effective communication across geographically distributed teams
- Implement talent retention strategies and career development pathways
Client Relations & Documentation:
- Serve as senior technical liaison and relationship manager for key client accounts
- Manage contractual performance obligations and ensure strict adherence to O&M agreements
- Lead client satisfaction initiatives and maintain proactive communication protocols
- Negotiate contract variations, performance guarantees, and service level agreements
- Handle escalated technical issues and provide strategic solutions to complex client challenges
- Develop long-term partnerships and identify opportunities for project extensions and expansions
Finance & Budgeting:
- Develop and manage comprehensive annual O&M budgets across the entire asset portfolio
- Implement cost optimization strategies and identify operational efficiency opportunities
- Track and analyze OPEX performance against budget targets and provide variance analysis
- Manage procurement strategies and vendor relationships to optimize costs
- Prepare detailed financial reports and business cases for asset optimization investments
- Collaborate with Finance team on revenue collection, invoicing, and financial reporting requirements
Training & Development:
- Design and implement comprehensive training programs for technical teams
- Establish competency frameworks and certification requirements for all technicians
- Coordinate with regulatory bodies to ensure compliance with licensing requirements (EPRA, etc.)
- Develop knowledge management systems and technical documentation librariesLead safety training initiatives and ensure adherence to international safety standards
- Mentor junior staff and provide career development guidance
Projects Planning & Implementation:
- Lead strategic asset optimization projects and performance enhancement initiatives
- Manage plant upgrades, technology retrofits, and capacity expansion projects
- Coordinate with Construction teams during new asset commissioning and handover processes
- Implement asset lifecycle management strategies and end-of-life planning
- Support business development activities with technical expertise, feasibility assessments, and feedback loop to improve future offering
- Drive innovation initiatives and evaluate new technologies for portfolio integration
Key Qualifications & Skills
- Technical qualification in Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical, or Computer Engineering
- 5+ years of experience in asset management or senior operations rolesProven track record of managing large-scale solar PV portfolios in Africa
- Experience managing geographically distributed teamsStrong background in Commercial and Industrial scale PV and BESS operations and maintenance
- Advanced knowledge of major PV inverter technologies (Huawei, Sungrow, Growatt, SMA, etc.)
- Expertise in advanced data analytics, performance monitoring systems, and dashboard tools
- Demonstrated experience in contract management and client relationship management
- Strong financial acumen with experience in budget development and cost management
- Exceptional leadership and team management capabilities
- Outstanding communication and presentation skills for executive-level reporting
- Strategic thinking with strong problem-solving and decision-making abilitiesEPRA Electrical licenses (A1, C1) and Solar Technician licenses (T1, T2, T3) highly advantageous
- PMP or equivalent project management certification would be advantageous
- Willingness to travel extensively across East and Southern Africa (up to 40% travel)
- Valid driver’s license and passport for multi-country travel
- Fluent in English and Swahili; additional regional languages advantageous
