Responsibilities

The recruited candidate will work under the direct supervision of the Lead of the Urban Mobility team. Supporting the team’s broad set of activities and projects, the Intern’s principal tasks will be as follows:

  • Supporting the development of a Walking & Cycling Strategy for Nairobi through the lens of children, aligned with the city’s NMT Master Plan.
  • Conducting desk research and synthesizing data from SR2S pilots, surveys, and participatory workshops with children, parents, and teachers.
  • Assisting in the design and facilitation of child-friendly participatory methods (e.g., mapping, drawing, storytelling) to capture children’s perspectives on mobility.
  • Drafting policy and strategy elements including vision, goals, and recommended actions for child-centered active mobility.
  • Preparing reports, knowledge products, and visual materials (maps, infographics, briefs) to communicate findings to Nairobi City County and partners.
  • Supporting coordination with Nairobi City County officials, schools, and partner organizations to align the strategy with local priorities.
  • Contributing to documentation of lessons learned for potential replication in other African cities.
  • Any other tasks assigned related to the team’s portfolio

Qualifications

Applicants must at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher),
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent),
  • Have graduated with Bachelor’s degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent. Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • Preferred areas of study: Urban planning/design, Architecture, Data Science; Environmental Science, Innovation Management; Computer Science, Urban Geography or another field deemed relevant to the subject areas covered by the Programme for the purpose of this internship.
  • In addition, successful applicants are expected to have demonstrated ability in one or more areas listed below:
    • Sound knowledge and understanding of active mobility concepts, active mobility planning, road safety, street design principles and child-centered mobility approaches is required.
  • Strong writing and analytical skills, with the ability to prepare concise and engaging reports and policy recommendations is required.
  • Familiarity with participatory methods for data collection (e.g. surveys, mapping, workshops, storytelling tools) is required.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with local authorities, schools, and communities, demonstrating initiative and attention to detail is required.
  • Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.
  • Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. Programme.

  • Please note that you will have to provide an official certificate at a later stage. Experience in researching active mobility in cities, particularly on walking, cycling, or Safe Routes to School is required.
  • Experience in producing and disseminating knowledge products and policy materials, such as reports, briefs, articles, or infographics on sustainable mobility is required.
  • Experience in working with local governments and community engagement is desirable.
