We are looking for experienced Senior Backend Engineers to join our core engineering team in Nairobi. You’ll own Africa’s critical lending infrastructure, from origination, underwriting, scoring, servicing, collections, repayments, and write-offs to integrations with mobile money systems, payment gateways, credit bureaus, and banking partners.
This is a high-impact role where your work must be financially precise, handling high volumes of transactions without reconciliation errors.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and scale backend services across the full loan lifecycle (origination, disbursement, servicing, collections, rescheduling, write-offs).
- Build and maintain the lending engine: loan scheduling, interest calculations (flat, reducing balance, daily), penalties, provisioning, and NPA/PAR management.
- Architect core banking features
- Implement secure, high-volume APIs and microservices for financial transactions.
- Ensure perfect data consistency, audit trails, and regulatory compliance.
- Mentor engineers and enforce financial-grade engineering standards.
- Collaborate with risk, product, compliance, and operations teams to translate complex financial products into clean, maintainable code.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- 5+ years of backend development experience.
- 2–3 years building production grade Loan Management Systems or Core Banking platforms (origination, servicing, collections).
- Preferred: PHP (Laravel Framework) for backend development.
- Desirable: Go or Python (FastAPI/Django) experience is a plus.
- Strong relational database skills (PostgreSQL/MySQL) and financial-grade schema design.
- Deep understanding of core banking: double-entry accounting, transaction posting, EOD batch processing, GL mapping, chart of accounts.
- Experience with event-driven systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ) and financial systems with eventual consistency.
- Knowledge of security best practices: encryption, PCI-DSS, authentication and authorization.
- Hands-on with microservices, Docker/Kubernetes, CI/CD, GCP.
- Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, good communication and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
Bonus Points
- Experience with Mambu, Finacle, Apache Fineract or other core banking systems.
- Prior experience working in African FinTechs.
- Multi-country, multi-currency system experience.
- M-PESA or other mobile money integrations.
Work Arrangement
- Hybrid setup: 2 days per week in the Nairobi office (Westlands), rest of the days remote.
- Candidates must be residents of Nairobi, Kenya.
