About the Role
Royal Mabati Factory Limited is seeking a diligent Legal Assistant to provide day-to-day legal and compliance support. This role ensures that the company’s operations are fully compliant with applicable laws and regulations. Responsibilities include drafting and reviewing contracts, supporting litigation, managing employee relations matters, monitoring compliance obligations, and safeguarding the company from legal and regulatory risks.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure all contracts and legal instruments are aligned with Kenyan laws and industry regulations.
- Maintain an up-to-date register of contracts, agreements, and legal documentation.
- Support ongoing litigation, attend hearings when required, and liaise with external advocates on court matters.
- Track judgments, court awards, and ensure timely implementation.
- Promote alternative dispute resolution (ADR) to minimize the escalation of legal disputes.
- Assist in monitoring and managing statutory and regulatory compliance schedules (permits, licenses, NEMA, DOSH, data protection, etc.), ensuring 100% compliance.
- Advise management on changes in legislation and their implications on company operations.
- Identify, assess, and mitigate potential legal and compliance risks.
- Support HR in handling employee relations matters, including disciplinary cases, ensuring closure within set timelines.
- Provide legal guidance on HR processes in compliance with Kenyan employment law.
- Assist in staff training on compliance, ethics, and legal obligations.
- Liaise with regulators, government agencies, and industry stakeholders on legal and compliance matters.
- Support the renewal and acquisition of all company permits, licenses, and certifications.
- Act as a point of contact with external legal counsel for corporate legal matters.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s Degree in Law (LLB) from a recognized university.
- Completion of Advocate Training Program (Kenya School of Law).
- Strong understanding of corporate, labor, commercial, and regulatory law in Kenya.
- Familiarity with employment law, industrial relations, and corporate compliance.
- Awareness of court procedures, statutory filings, and regulatory frameworks affecting manufacturing companies.
- Holder of a valid practicing certificate (an added advantage).
- Proven ability in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts and agreements.
- Skilled in legal research, statutory interpretation, and risk assessment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to explain complex legal concepts clearly.
- Competent in MS Office applications and legal research databases.
- Proactive and solution-oriented approach to legal and compliance challenges.
- Capacity to manage multiple legal matters simultaneously and meet deadlines.
- High ethical standards, confidentiality, and integrity in handling company matters.
- Ability to work cross-functionally with HR.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Contract and Policy Review: Number of contracts, agreements, and policies reviewed per month.
- Compliance Monitoring: Percentage compliance with statutory and regulatory obligations.
- Litigation Management: Percentage of court cases with timely follow-up and reporting.
- Advisory Support: Average turnaround time for legal queries.
- Risk Management: Number of legal risks identified and mitigated per quarter.
- Record Management: Percentage accuracy of legal document records.
